A thread to tell the backstory/thought process behind your username.
For me, when I found these forums, I wanted to have a name of my own that wasn't something like "cooldude101" or "cop102" (which were actual usernames I've used years ago). I wanted to have a name that was original, sounded nice, but didn't sound like I was trying too hard.
Well, I couldn't think of any, so I just used the names from one of my characters of one of my old stories I was reworking in my head (a character who I took out during that rework).
Oh, and to clarify: It's pronounced ar-kin-dale, not ar-chin-dale. I've had friends who've said chin, and I realized that it was my fault for spelling it weird.

Cool backstory, Archindale (ar-kin-dale!), and great thread idea; I guess I will share mine too.
A long time ago, I was playing a game called Graal Online. At the time, there were only a few appearance options and one of them was a ghostly figure. I made some friends who also looked like ghosts and we all had spooky names, mine for example was Phantos! I based it off of the Super Mario 2 monster that chases you when you take the key item. That name has stuck with me for something like 15 years now, all because of a little impromptu friend group in a crummy early-days MMO.

I first registered the username "Sharkalien" for Club Penguin about 10 years ago, when I was seven years old. I've always had an interest in extraterrestrial life, and I just thought sharks were cool at the time

i used to go through a bunch of usernames, from really cheesy cool sounding stuff (Killzone9000) to more dark and edgy stuff, cuz thats what was cool (i.e Reapersblood, Shadeslight64[64 cuz N64, i grew up with that]). i also used a random tag generated by xbox 360 for the longest time, want to say it was Maroon something-some numbers. i eventually settled on HypergressiveAgent, since in all the games i play im always Hyper Agressive, to the point of diving way too deep or just being plain greedy. i like to think im a bit more tempered now, but i constantly yell, so i dont feel the need to change it.
kinda segwayed into some gamertag stuff, dont know if this thread is strictly forum names or not.

I think this was about 6 years ago when I was 14, I was struggling to think of a good new tumblr url, I forget why I was changing it, but I was playing the Sims 3 and looking at all the wall decorations, and one of them was "Inspired Simji". So yeah, my username is a Sims reference.

I sort of have a few usernames which I use, but for now i'll be talking about my main one, NothingIsOkay75.
I was about 10 or 11, and young me was probably thinking "Man, I really need a good username."
I remember going on "Epicmafia", and just making an account with the bad username i was using then, "BooXD", which is an entirely different story. I was playing a round, and I saw someone say "That is not fine." and that stuck with me, in the form of "NothingIsFine75"
Long story short, i got banned, and made a new account with the name "NothingIsOkay75" And here we are now, with holiday themed spins on the name (NothingIsSPOOPY75, NothingIsTHANKFUL75, and NothingIsMERRY75.)

Early 2000s, hanging out on Battle.net through Starcraft, Warcraft 3 and Diablo 2. Hung out in the Town Square channel on USEast. Lots of roleplaying, lots of drama. Go with a friend to USWest to try and avoid the latter, they give me the nickname Wes, which I liked, because it reminded me of Wes(t)ley from The Princess Bride. Appended Foxx to it because I am not creative with names so I used an actual surname which made reference to my character's species. Liked how namely it was so I kept using it ever since, sometimes with a full Wesley, sometimes not. And I think some places only one x, and with or without a space generally depending on whether the place let you use spaces or not.

Sort of an embarassing story, but "TrickleJest" came out from a random word generator. I got Trickle first and then Jest, and ended up sticking with that.
Previous names include [not comfortable with revealing my name so I'm cropping this]123, CubedCubone (I was like 9 when I made that hahaha), FACEPALM ON EVERYTHING and other crap.

It's the name of the main character in a French novel called "Wonderful", which I really liked. Mostly because my name's also Carmine. Basically, the guy is an artistic teen living in an abusive household, so he escapes cruel reality into his perfect dreamworld, invents himself a family, and most likely becomes crazy to the point he kills himself. I related a lot to that story, because I was in a really bad period back then, and it resonated in many ways. So I took on that pseud, and it kept on.

My username here is not the username I usually go by. Basically, when I made an account on the MSPA forums I decided to use a chumhandle-style username based on my actual initials. After looking through a dictionary for S-words and C-words for some time I eventually came up with sentientCitizen, a meaningless but rather fun name. Though I ended up using it, I wasn't entirely happy with it so I continued mull over what else I could go by. At some point I randomly saw the words silly and conformist together and thought it was quite humourous so I ended up going with that.
In case anyone is wondering, my usual username is Qeelk, which is just the result of me stringing letters together until I got something I liked the sound of.

It pretty much started when I signed up on a Pokemon RPG site called Pokemon Creed (which is now dead) as UmbreonRogue, because at the time I had an Umbreon OC right before the species became my favorite Pokemon. Ever since then, I used a username that had "Umbreon" in it, like the aforementioned UmbreonRogue, CrazyUmbreonLady, or here, PlatinumUmbreon.

At one point in school I was making an argument to the class, and referring to what a classmate has said, but forgetting his name because I'm terrible with names, I ended up saying something along the lines of "like, uh, the one guy said..." Anther classmate joked arround repeating saying "The one guy!" and it became a little short-lived in-joke. Fast forward a year or so later when I was making my first internet account (for online Age of Empires III; that's another, rather embarrasing, story), I wanted to make something that represented me and I could continue to use in any account I made. But this was diffuclut as I never got any nickname that was meaningful or stuck. Then I thought back to the in-joke; not only was it the only in-joke I ever was the cause of, but it also seemed fitting: In any sort of group, I've always seemed to be the guy that everyone knew who I was if mentioned, but despite how unusual of a person i am, if asked to think of who they know in the group, I'd never be one of the first to come to mind. I was just ... the one guy. So I named my account that and have used that name everywhere on the internet since.

My first foray into online chat (and roleplaying) was on USWest Town Square back in the late 90s!! Good times, bad nicknames, for sure. I can't believe you've kept it for even longer than me! My very first nickname I made for battle.net, and thus my first handle ever, was DoubleMintGum. My grandpa had a pack of gum and I hadn't thought to be original yet so there it goes.

But i think I'm crossing a line just saying his name without consent. hopefully this thread stays small forever so he never finds out about it. Wait, no, worrying about that is so dumb nobody here has a relation between my forum name and anything else, how could they extrapolate to a guy I know?

Post by Blizzriel on Nov 30, 2016 0:35:39 GMT
I've already told the story of my past usernames in the re-intro thread:
I've never posted about how I got to "Blizzriel" though. I always kind of envied people who had usernames that sounded original or that you could say in place of their name and not feel silly. Like, if you called someone goldenBelieber or NarutoFanOneBillion (both of which I made up on the spot; I am a fan of neither of those things) you'd be like "oh, it's that person with the username", but Blizzriel gets the reaction of "oh, it's Blizzriel" like "oh, it's Nicole". That's why I was never happy with my past usernames.
One day, I decided that I needed a good username to represent myself with as I started working toward having actual recognition online, so I took a step back and really thought about what I wanted to be known as. I took a word that I liked, which was blizzard, and tried to make it sound like a name. And that's how I got Blizzriel (bliz-ree-ell), which I think I'm going to stick with from now on.

Most usernames I go by usually contain my first name (because stupidity is appearantly one of my defining traits). A lot of my previous usernames have all been rather generic, but one day i sat down and said "alright, i need a username that i can use consistently, says a bit about who i am, and isn't stone cold retarded" after a while, i came up with this hot mess of a name.

My current username started when I wanted to create my version of a Homestuck like screen name. I wanted something that I could use that I wouldn't dislike or get bored with quickly while maintaining a 'cool' factor that I could stomach without it being cheesy. I'm a little bit of a word nerd and vivid happens to be my favorite word, I also like the letter V for some reason.. And vivid has double the V's of other words.
In the past, I used to go by other stuff with the word vivid in it, or just plain on Vivid and am still called by just that online most of the time. I also don't really come out into the spotlight online and normally don't like to when it comes to things. I am fascinated by things I perceive as mysterious, and would like to think of myself as that. Even though in reality I probably am not, but that is how the second part of my name came into play. Also VividObscurity sounds cool imo, despite being a bit of an oxymoron.

My usernames had no consistency before about 2010. Around that point I played a lot of TF2. I set my Steam name to "King of Sandvich" (the exact phrase I think came from a stupid YouTube video) and stuck with that for a while. It also became my Minecraft name.
I joined MSPAF in June 2011, attempting to use that exact name, but my ISP swallowed the account activation emails. I tried again with GMail and "Sandvich King", which worked.
I eventually got sick of "Sandvich", plus I worried that people who didn't know TF2 would raise an eyebrow at it. Since I'm fond of Cobalt Blue, and had that color in my avatar on most sites, I figured that would be a good candidate. So my username became "King Cobalt". When MSPAF held a round of name change requests, I made that one official.
I also started getting sick of "King" too, and I had at least one friend who didn't like calling me that. But I lacked a replacement for a while. Well, one October I decided to give myself a Halloween URL on Tumblr. I realized that I could fit "Cobalt" and "Poltergeist" together without too much trouble. So I tried out "Cobaltergeist" for a month.
Next year I liked it enough to reuse it, and I made my current avatar to accompany it. Then when October finished I kinda just decided to keep it. I'm fine with being a spoopy blue ghost year-round. Over time I switched everything I could over to the new name and avatar. And now here we are.

Back when I first got into Homestuck in like 2012, I wanted to make a self-insert character for a SBURB adventure that I never finished developing. My character needed a chumhandle so I came up with quixoticTokki.
'Quixotic' was a word I had a loose grasp on, and took it to mean somewhat "dreamy" or prone to fantasies and daydreams. (I'm still a little unsure of what the word actually means, but that was how I wanted to use it.) And 'tokki' is the Korean word for rabbit, playing off my love for rabbits and my kpop obsession of 2012 - my favorite group's mascots were even rabbits as well. (I was also learning Korean at the time, so there you go.) I also really liked the initials 'QT' since when read out loud it sounds like 'cutie.'
Then when I signed up for the forums earlier this year, I didn't feel like using one of my usual usernames, so I went with my old chumhandle since it was a Homestuck forum after all. When the original forums went down and I migrated over here, I just kept the same name.
