Back when it as 3D, I would've thouht this too. Now that it's 2D, I'm not so sure. ??? Broken Age was a 2D game. Shit, you're right. Musta got it mixed up with a different game.

When the kickstarter was first announced, I was really disappointed that I didn't have the money to donate at the time, but honestly... the way things are going now, I'm actually pretty glad I didn't invest any money in this thing. Don't get me wrong though, a game based on Homestuck would still be really cool and all, but in order for it to even come moderately close to living up to my expectations or having all the features I want, it would either take a ton of money, which just won't be possible because Hiveswap isn't being developed by a major company, or it would require technology that isn't currently available.
But I think the thing that's really getting to me is just how jacked up the development process seems to have been thus far. I mean, the game's original release date was supposed to be... literally years ago, now. And while I realize that was really just a severe underestimation of the time and effort it's going to take to finish Hiveswap, it really isn't all that reassuring that the whole thing just seemed to kind of fall off, and any updates or information we've had about how development has been going have been generally vague and sparse. To me, it all just seems like one big mess, quite frankly. But even that probably won't stop me from buying Hiveswap a little while after it comes out, if it ever eventually does, and if it actually looks like it'll be worth it. Or else I'll probably end up just watching a let's play or something.

I don't see what the shame is in showing support for the game, then or now. If anything, I wish I could have donated more than I did, or could now. Though my "modest" donation at the time was as much as high as I could go for a project that was a huge question mark, even for as much of a fan of Homestuck and Andrew Hussie as I was.
It is a shame things have gotten so delayed, but not really surprising. No doubt Andrew isn't an idiot who didn't know what he was doing, but I guess he hoped things would go a lot more smoothly than they ended up doing. However, I don't see why any of this is an indication to jump ship or turn your back on it, like it's this big awful thing now. It will come out when it's ready, and I remain confident it will be a good adventure game. I sincerely HOPE it hits at least modest success, and I'd like to see that second game get produced if at all possible.
I still think, once the first episode comes out, things will go a lot more quickly from there. All this turbulence has been a result of trying to set up a game-making engine, but by then, the engine will be at full steam. Of course, there's always room for unexpected and unfortunate delays, but still.

in one of the ks updates they mentioned they wanted to do another game, cinda halfway between a sequel and a spinoff called "homeswitch" where trolls would come to earth, instead of kids in alternia
they said something about how that would only happen if the first game comes out sucessfully so they could make some money, so who knows if its feasible now.

The plan as it was discussed was around four episodes or acts of Hiveswap, i.e. Joey's journey through Alternia, having swapped places with Dammek, the antler troll. The companion game, which I don't believe was named (though apparently Joey lives in a town called Hauntswitch, so...), is the inverse, the adventures of a troll on Earth at presumably the same or similar length. In theory.
Which would be plenty interesting, it seems like there's a lot of interesting stuff happening on Earth. I always wondered how strong the connection between Earth and Alternia would be. Would Joey be able to keep communicating with Jude? Would those weird green monsters follow her through? If anything, that all almost seems like stuff that could disappear in Hiveswap, but be followed up on with Dammek's adventure, who would be there to deal with that.
Just one of the many exciting mysteries I'm keen to see solved when this game comes out. C:

I really dislike people who become famous the way that Cohen did. Having him be the lead writer of a project like this seems like such a perversion of the creative process that it actually makes me upset, not really for Hiveswap so much as the world.

Most of that time is going to be compulsively trying everything with everything at every possible opportunity. Oh god I'm going to love this game so much, I hope. It's not any worse than him starting the project by turning to his personal friends for help getting his ideas off the ground before getting a team on it. By which I mean, I think there's a little more to it than capriciously choosing someone from twitter or whatever. I for one thought the fact his fame was apparently built off his ability to write quick snappy humor spoke for itself in terms of why Andrew was attracted to him. I'm more curious about these "heavy hitters" apparently waiting in the shadows that were mentioned.

Uh, okay. Why? He certainly didn't do anything wrong, he became famous by getting good at writing jokes, basically. IMO it makes him a good choice for contributing to the project, so I don't really get how it perverts the creative process...?

I am confused.
Seriously, am I the only person who is not pissed about how long it is taking for this game to come out? Like, three to four years is not unheard of when it comes to game dev stuff, especially for a studios first attempt. Hell, Nintendo has been developing the newest Legend of Zelda game for at least as long if not longer, yet no one has been like "Yeah, Nintendo is totally a mess." Sure, maybe people wish the game would come out sooner, but its not like everyone thinks that Nintendo is suddenly incompetent or something. And this is a studio that knows what they're doing and has tons of experience. Sure, you could argue that Trip A titles take longer to produce because they are larger, but even smaller titles can take a long ass time to develop.
I know that communication is being all weird and the fact that people invested in the game makes it more personal, but expecting a game to come out within a year or two is pretty insane.

Okay, but Undertale also had its release date pushed back. There are plenty of games that have come out within a year that I love (Crash 2, Spyro 3, Majora's Mask, all of the FnaF games), so maybe that point is moot. Lemme restructure it a bit:
What I'm trying to point out is that a game should be allowed time to go through development. There are so many instances where a company will fart out a game just because they need to meet deadlines, or if they didn't release it at a certain date, they wouldn't make as much money. And those games turn into buggy messes that obviously were shoved out the door without any care for the product or the customers. I would rather have a game take longer so that it can be a stronger product overall than it follow projected deadlines or rushed out the door so that fans have their instant gratification. I am willing to wait for good things to come down the pipeline. I don't think Undertale's short dev cycle means that it is better. Undertale is a good game because it had a lot of talent and heart behind it. So, I don't understand why that same courtesy can't be given to something like Hiveswap.

I agree Though im kinda annoyed that they aren't updating their sites. Everywhere else except the kickstarter it says "3D point-and-click adventure game" and there are quite a few dev blogs showing the 3d assets. what pumpkin NYC blog and twitter are both still up

yea undertale was originall planned for a release "summer 2014"
ended up being nearly autumn 2015
i get not being HAPPY with pushbacks but like. between a game being pushed back and being released in a shitty state hell yeah i'll prefer it waiting till it's good. pushing a release back CAN give you more time to fix shit and polish it up and make it into a good product, which can very much make up for delays, while rushing to release it on a date even if unfinished just feels shitty with no fixing it
basically what i'm trying to say is. at least release pushbacks are only momentary - the game's gonna be coming out at some point anyways, so in the long run, i'd say it's way better

That was a disaster less because of the time it took to make DN:F, and more because the development kept getting passed between studios and scrapped and restarted. Which actually has happened to Hiveswap once already, but a single occurrence shouldn't be that big a deal.

I think the only reason anyone would really have for being kind of upset at this point is because early last year they were really hyping up the game and how it would be coming out really soon (aiming at spring, then mid-year, before it all sort of went dark). Like, it's something to have delays (especially with all that stuff we learned about the TOG situation), but when you start giving the impression that it's ready to drop *any second*, only to then cut off all communication for months on end, well, it's obviously gonna rustle some jimmies, push people's patience and provoke some doomsayers.
I'm personally not fazed. I remain ever optimistic about Hiveswap's future. But I can definitely understand where negativity regarding the game would come from (though there hasn't been that much of that in this thread, comparatively speaking). The way things went and are going make WP look kinda unprofessional.
And honestly, optimistic though I am, I just don't understand why they're handling their PR so poorly. Like, literally all it would take to assuage fans would be like, a small update each month, even every other month, just a little "hey things are going ok," maybe throw in one piece of concept art or something. Give us the name of one of the random trolls they showed or a random new troll sign or anything. Throwing the fans a bone, any bone, would go a long way. This perpetual silence* is only making things worse.
*and i mean like...james roach has been occasionally providing some optimism regarding the game on reddit or wherever and of course now we have that interview, but there hasn't been word from hussie or the hiveswap team in any official capacity since december, which is Not good
