Fuck, if I told some people I know I see all of the kids as white (with the exception of jade, which I think is some strange breed of asian) I'm getting choked out. I can see why

I've mostly been wrecked by saying "JOHN AIN'T BLACK MANG" than by saying that I thought jade is asian which is surprisingly well accepted

In Neptz defense the people who were attacking her were probably also the kind of people that would describe Jade in a similar manner, but in a creepy, race-fetishizing way like you see a lot on Tumblr. God knows I've seen enough examples of it myself.

Then there's also people who are very, very passionate about headcanons. Fuck, if I told some people I know I see all of the kids as white (with the exception of jade, which I think is some strange breed of asian) I'm getting choked out. That's really stupid on their part. I don't understand people like those.

This forum HAS been pretty tame so far, all things considered. But yeah, when your head canons start to prevent you or someone else from having fun, you're prolly doing it wrong.

Yeah I'm absolutely sure the reason behind not allowing those topics was because of drama. I remember the serious business area on the MSPAF and I also remember never going in to it because nearly every topic turned from peaceful discussion to toxic drama by the 2nd page of said topic. So while I understand you might have wanted to host those topics, honestly, there are better forums to host it then a forum centered around a single fandom. So honestly I think they were in the clear to shut down those topics given the track record those topics had. Usually on sites where I've been to like nma and gta forums we have discussions like those all the time. And usually everyones Civil about it. I found at the best is usually make the thread and keep some distance from it. I don't see why they couldn't act Civil about it back then. Maybe 2011 really sucked? But I think as the guy above me said it probably had more to do with headcannons and people being quick to shut someone off or call them a racist. Personally I think John's some white dude

Personally I think John's some white dude Except I'm talking about the Serious Business area. The Serious Business area was an area people could talk about politics and things going on in the world / serious current events / the wars. Not headcanons. I suggest trying to set up a serious business topic again here and see how it goes. Maybe things have changed, or maybe it's going to be just as bad as it was before. It wouldn't be a bad idea to give it a test run if you think it's possible it can be civil. Edit: I personally would stay completely away from the Serious Business unless by some long shot it ends up being civil and not a train wreck again.

I'm just gonna say that if we end up with a serious business discussion area, I'm not going near it with a 10 foot metaphorical pole. If any shit of that sort gets brought to me to deal with, I'm either going to ignore it or nuke it from orbit. That part of the forum got at LEAST twice as many reports and infractions than the rest of the forum combined. It was a CONSTANT headache. And it lingered, too, with people continuing to argue across the rest of the forum for weeks afterwards and people repeatedly petitioning for us to bring it back ever since.

Nuke it from orbit. You might destroy the rest of the forums depending on the yield. Personally I can see why you guys brought it down. Maybe the people who went to that sub forum were just really not mature or ready for differing opinions.

This very topic is already convincing me that the right atmosphere for sensible discussion still doesn't exist here.

Does this forum even have a large enough community to justify opening a subforum for topics already prone to emotional outbursts? I don't have much of a problem with the idea itself, but considering how many people who will just avoid it out of principle, might not be the best idea to open up something that volatile.

I have never been to a forum whose pg-13 rule was so severely limiting that I felt I couldn't make a topic or do a certain post. What sort of topics did you feel you were unable to make due to the rules? Honestly, (and I used this comparison back when people were complaining on the MSPA Forums, too), other forums are/were MUCH more restricting. The Paizo forums, for D&Desque games, constantly delete entire discussions. The Runescape forums, at least when I was on them, banned any off-topic discussions whatsoever - you had to talk about the game, or you were out. Part of this may be because the MSPA community is a little more chill and a little smaller, so discussions get/got out of hand less often, but really what we had on the old forums was quite open. Edit: Oh, I didn't see the new page. Yeah, actually, never mind about this community being more chill . . .

People are already and have been in previous pages being rude and dismissive of others, often apparently without realising it. Haha yeah..... this thread quickly got out of hand MSPA Forums went like 6 months once without a single ban (at least according to the ban log); it was pretty much the most well-behaved forum of that size I've ever been on, so it was some pretty good stuff. I don't think it was too strict honestly. The Baby is You getting pulled off and Radiation getting infracted and stuff was too far, but the mods were mostly nice and actually posted a lot of cool stuff even after becoming mods, subverting the Moderators Become Stuffy and Condescending stereotype that exists on many forums. Softowl had some interesting moments but those were big exceptions and I won't go into those because it's rude to talk about people who can't respond (also because I can't remember any specific examples anymore lol).

MSPA Forums went like 6 months once without a single ban (at least according to the ban log) Ah, but is that because the people were well behaved, or because the forums were terribly understaffed, as was made evident in the Hackening. Plus, I suspect that 6 months you're referring to was in the middle of one of the larger pauses, when the forums become largely dormant, with the number of active users dwindling down to under a thousand. So it's debatable whether ban-dry-spell statistics are as meaningful if we're comparing against other forums that might have more constant usage.

I can't remember anymore, and I can't find you the evidence obviously on account of the forum being dead. But there were still less than 100 bans a year even at peak fandom level ex. Summer 2012 to 4/13/13, which is still really good. The understaffed nature I don't think applies to mods because there were a lot of them (though a lot of the admins seemed like they never checked in after a while), though it was apparently in need of more than one code monkey seeing as it was basically blown up all at once without a backup...
