If it makes anyone feel better about the situation, I think the reason why WP is being so conservative with the server stuff is because it was a server-side problem that caused the downfall of the forums in the first place. I've gotten the impression that they want to make sure it's as airtight as they can get it before making anything public. From the company's viewpoint, compromising user data to hackers is a bigger risk than not having official forums. Of course, general organizational sluggishness and logistical shenanigans have exacerbated it, but I think this is root cause. In my opinion, the forum software we're using eliminates most of the security risk. That said, they do have far more industry experience than I do, so I might be wrong.

It is true that the old forum's software was a very old and clunky piece of conksunk.I also suspect that the total lack of admins also contributed to the forum's downfall at the hands of some script kiddy. I don't suppose you know anything about who or what sort of admins we might be getting with the new forum? Will you be sticking around as a Sys-admin? |

I'm as disappointed about the absence of the official forum as anyone, but even besides Philip's point about server-side technical stuff, at this point it might actually be better to wait until they have time to devote to maintaining it rather than just throw it out with a brief announcement and go back into radio silence on their end due to the upcoming release of Hiveswap. I don't imagine them launching the new forum and it immediately being unstaffed because they're preoccupied will do much good for anyone.

I'm still checking in as the guy who's more interested in the recovery of old posts than the revival of a new active forum. Which isn't very nice of course, to butt in here and be all "I don't care about your community" (which isn't fully true, but it's essentially what I'm doing). But yeah: is that recovery still something that might happen? Is it still something that can't go forward until the new forums are live?To be honest, I feel similarly. Though in my case it's not so much that I don't care about the community, and more that I know the community exists regardless, just lacking an official centralized home. The old forum's posts, on the other hand, may have been lost forever, and we haven't heard anything regarding if we'll get them back. |

I'm pretty selfish with mostly just missing the fact that the stories I wrote are all dead and gone. Open Canvas particularly; based on my folders I got almost 400 images into it before I ran out of steam. Yousugo of course was partially saved, which is disappointing because that was just me recycling my same old story for the dozenth time so I really don't care if it vanished. -Mowz= was also fun but because of the non-lucid dream structure of how I did that one, since I still have the pictures, I basically still have the story, minus the exact suggestions that shaped it.

Honestly, I think the community is better-off not relying upon the 'official' community. On the downside, the 'safe spaces' that the old forum was supposed to provide no longer exist. On the plus side, greater freedom in how the community interacts.
Honestly, there's nothing really preventing What Pumpkin providing a read-only version of the forum, either temporary (to allow former members to access and archive personal material) or as a sort of living memorial document.
The only real blockage is having the will/interest/desire to invest necessary time/resources in making this happen. Unless WP changes dramatically in its current path, I do not see this happening.
Let me know if anyone wants memorial celebrations next week.
