I probably wouldn't categorize Davepetasprite^2 as pandering via making a non-binary character, but I think I skimmed over all their pesterlogs because they made my eyes hurt so I don't remember much about how that situation was handled. Was that one done well? I remember it being done pretty well. The conversation on Davepeta's gender basically amounted to: DAVEPETA: im not a boy DAVEPETA: and im not a girl DAVEPETA: so just use 'they' i guess JASPROSE: Okay.Which, I think, was the best way to do it. If you want to normalise something or present something as not a big deal, then making a big song and dance about how normal it is somewhat defeats the point in my opinion.

Okay, that one's good then. I was worried it would be a little too much like the Dirk/Dave convos near the end that basically turned into a PSA for several pages. Hussie's been very good about normalizing LGBT-related stuff, while not making it seem like some utopian group of pure, accepting individuals (the main characters ARE teens from 2009 after all). My hopefully-popular opinion is that Homestuck has been one of the best pieces of media to help grow LGBT acceptance in the past decade, though that may be unpopular after all, IDK.

I never really felt much sympathy for Tavros no matter what happened to him, mostly because he never did much of anything to justify himself as a character until the end. When he wasn't being used as a prop for other characters to act upon, he was just boring and pathetic.
Dead Vriska's character arc completely derailed at the end and she stopped being recognizable as Vriska, while post-retcon Vriska felt a lot more like a more developed Vriska.
While Sollux is a pretty good character, I just can't fathom him in a romantic relationship, other than maybe blackrom.
Eridan gets waaaaay too much of a bad rap. He's not as willing to commit murder as he likes to says he is, and he probably freaked out shortly after he killed Feferi.
I still ship the patron ships, and you can pry Aradia/Eridan from my cold dead hands.
Act 7 was a decent ending, and most of the 'loose theads' people talk about aren't really much of a big deal.

Tavros doesn't really deserve the sympathy he gets. I agree that some people jumped on his side far too quickly. "DON'T HURT MY PRECIOUS CINNAMON ROLL!!!" He has his problems. Every troll has.

She's my least favorite troll, mostly because of how dumb the whole "forgive me everyone!!!" chat with John in the afterlife was, and how it basically won everyone's love for her. But I don't like Tavros either.

You're free to ship whatever you want, but...where do ships like this even come from? Tavros doesn't really deserve the sympathy he gets. I don't like him at all, but I don't think he did anything to deserve all the harassment he went through either. Although personally I don't care that much just because it's fictional and he's not a character I really give a shit about, but if he were a real person I'd sympathize a lot more I think. And to add a possibly unpopular opinion...Homestuck was kind of terrible at character development, not even taking the retcon into account. Some characters got quite a bit, but the vast majority of them got very, very little. Most of the things fans think about the characters come from fandom characterizations, fanfics, theories, etc. rather than actual canon. I think it's because there were so many characters and Homestuck put so much emphasize on plot and comedy at the same time that a lot of characters just never got much examination or development past "basic personality archetype + quirks" (and I'm talking about more than just the obvious examples like Nepeta, Feferi, and dancestors).

Oh yeah, Tavros definitely didn't deserve half the shit he went through. That was just completely unsolicited. It was kinda dumb that he just challenged Vriska at the end, though. Like, what was he expecting?

And then after he was killed, Tavros wanted to marry Vriska. Tavros is really dumb.

Tavros is stupid. He doesn't deserve sympathy. He's almost as pitiful as Eridan imo.

Disliking and treating someone as subhuman because they are stupid and pitiful is not exactly bad. People are people, and they aren't bad for being dumber than your average Joe. Tavros made dumb decisions which got him killed in the end, but he doesn't deserve that kind of shit.
Maybe I'm overplaying what aquilus said, though.

I think the problem is the character development in Homestuck has been seriously lopsided. Sometimes it's really really good. Other times....not so much at all. So then the good bits make the bad bits really stand out. Oh yeah, Tavros definitely didn't deserve half the shit he went through. That was just completely unsolicited. It was kinda dumb that he just challenged Vriska at the end, though. Like, what was he expecting? There were theories that Tavros's death at the hands of Vriska was part of a deal he made with his Denizen, which wouldn't surprise me. She tells dead!John that she doesn't know how Tavros got past his Denizen, and he was using his communing powers with the underlings on his planet instead of fighting them, which suggests to me he might have elected to make a Choice instead of picking a fight. Also, it appears that 'fake it 'til you make it' is a philosophy Pages have to grow out of. And then after he was killed, Tavros wanted to marry Vriska. Tavros is really dumb. *sigh* I know Hussie wasn't good at portraying it, (pretty much everything with Vriska and Tavros was just ugh) but come on people. You all know that abusive relationships are more complicated than the abused party staying because they're dumb, right?

Okay, what? How does that have to do with anything? It's literally just a emote. I know. I was kinda Messing with him there. My point being Tavros is the kinda guy who doesn't really see how dangerous someone is to him or really cannot say no. And also has the weirdest response to someone who tried to kill him. And if someone hurts him. I see him as being really pitiful about it. I can't feel sorry for someone if they don't do anything to change their situation or make it better. Effort to do so.

As in he can be a pitiful excuse for a person at times.

You've still got the problem of interpretation there if it can mean both. Usually when I feel sorry for them. I say "I pity that guy". Or "Man he's looking a little pitiful at the moment". In the sense I used it in, I used it as in "You're a really pitiful person, you should stop it".

I'm not really sure this is the place to be discussing whether or not Tavros deserves out pity, nor the place to discuss how we define pitiful. (<---- Maybe an unpopular opinion? Who knows.) If you feel it might be worth the effort though, by all means create a discussion on it. I might even contribute myself if it strikes my fancy. And in obligation to follow the title of this thread and post an unpopular opinion of homestuck... Almost every classpect theory I've ever had.

I don't think those two characters interacted once in the entire comic. You're free to ship whatever you want, but...where do ships like this even come from? Well, I feel like they would be cute together, in an eccentric sort of way. Also, Aradia's probably one of the few trolls he hasn't completely alienated with his awkwardness.
