I mean my issue with "Earth" is... does Pokemon even take place on Earth? The Sun and Moon are also distant objects, whereas the Earth is very very close, so I don't think it fits quite the same theme.
Maybe "Pokemon Planet" would work though.

Or y'know, Pokémon Eclipse works too. Or maybe that'll be the evil team name. Who knows? The Butterfree/Venomoth thing imo isnt that the Pokémon in their entirety got swapped, it's that the sprites or designs did. If they got it the "right way round", Butterfree would be the exact same Pokémon, it'd just have Venomoth's DESIGN. Venomoth's Japanese name is Morpho, which is a butterfly genus, not a moth, so it's possible that the name and sprites just got mixed up somehow. It's worth noting that the English names for these Pokémon have very little relevance, as the game was only localised to English a while after it's Japanese release, at which point if it was a mistake, they would've just stuck with it. So basically, This should've been Butterfree, the Bug/Flying type that evolves from Metapod. And this Should've been Venomoth, the Bug/Poison type that evolves from Venonat. Whether it was a coding error (very possible what with Gen 1's track record), or a deliberate decision to swap the two Pokémon, I definitely believe that at point point, it was the case that Butterfree was Venomoth and Venomoth was Butterfree. It doesn't really matter now of course, but it's a super cool theory and I really like it.

people love to think the butterfree/venomoth swap thing is an actual thing, but i'm pretty sure butterfree was always supposed to look like the current butterfree. it's like people who insist that gastly and cloyster have some kind of connection since they both involve black spheres in their design. unless someone who worked on the games were to actually confirm or deny the butterfree/venomoth thing, i don't think the two were actually swapped at any point like fans so want to believe

It's probable that the Pokemon universe takes place on a planet at least similar to Earth, as the regions are based on real-world locations.
I'm still checking Serebii for news on Sun and Moon. Nothing since the trademarks were discovered.

Nothing since the trademarks were discovered. The regions are based on real life regions in that they have similarly shaped landmasses... but the similarity ends there. I mean the fact that we have regions based on parts of a continent but floating on their own as a series of islands is a clue there I just meant, the only way we've been introduced to the "place" the game takes place is where it's called the "world of pokemon". It's not unlikely that the planet is still called Earth but as it's never actually been stated, that would make "Earth" weird to me as a name. e: In fact after further investigation, there is a linked interview in that bulbapedia article that states the following:

Well, if we go by the 4Kids dub of the first movie, the Pokemon World includes both vikings and Minnesota. /sarcasm

I see your point, Jacquerel. Though I have to question why there was actual fish (not fish-like Pokemon) at one point in the early days of the Pokemon anime.

I see your point, Jacquerel. Though I have to question why there was actual fish (not fish-like Pokemon) at one point in the early days of the Pokemon anime. That's simply because the original 151 simply didn't give them a wide enough range of fauna to populate every ecosystem Ash and Co went through. That and they may have been struggling with the idea of all meat coming from Pokemon, though considering a very early episode involving Misty trying to kill and eat a Farfetch'd who she knows is endangered, maybe not.

It's a bit up in the air whether or not other "regular" animals exist or not. I would think so, and Pokemon are a bit different from regular animals.

I think regular animals do exist in the pokemon world, they just aren't given any focus BECAUSE HEY POKEMON ARE COOLER

We just got the reveal of the first stuff from Sun and Moon! It came in the form of a brief but jam packed youtube video, so you should go check it out if you're as excited as I am! There is also a Japanese trailer which offers a few little tidbits we don't have in the english trailer, so check that out too! In addition, there's a Pokémon Sun and Moon official site up, which offers a few little tidbits as well! I've linked what should be the US site, but you can change your region at the bottom too! There's not much difference, but the release date is slightly later in Europe. Spoilery reaction in the... well, spoiler. First off the FRICKIN STARTERS ARE ALL GOOD? LIKE HOW DO I DECIDE THEY'RE ALL ADORABLE. I think I'm leaning in Rowlet's direction, but I'm definitely gonna have to see what the evolutions look like before deciding anything.
The legendaries have really cool designs too! I'm definitely getting Sun though. Its Legendary is just cooler, sorrynotsorry. Release date of November 23rd (for me, bc I'm British) is nice to know as well!
Next up, some smaller but still cool details. The professor's name is Hala, which is another Tree (of course). the region's name is Alola, and combined with the look, deifnitely makes me think Hawaii is the basis for it. Island hopping adventure here we go! ALSO THE GRAPHICS AND TRAINER DESIGN ARE SO GOOD AHHHHH. Alsox2, looks like trainer customization is back! At the very least you can choose your skintone again, so that's really awesome.
There's like a bunch more little cool things I could talk about but I'm gonna stop here. SUPER HYPED THOUGH.

obligatory #teamrowlet post unless rowlet ends up being the ridiculous fan favorite like snivy was, in which case i will switch happily to #teampopplio

Litten, because rowlet is literally just a egg and popplio looks strange. I think lions are dumb and overrated so moon is my choice.

For me it will depend on their final evolutions and how easy it is to build the rest of my team. I will probably end up with Rowlet for two reasons; one, because I hate having to keep a bird in the bank for flying purposes, and two, because if its as island themed as it seems, I expect the most common enemy types will be water and grass.
I'm also disappointed we have yet another gen where we can't have a fun subversion of the typing superiority and have their secondary types go counter to their main typing. (eg, something like we nearly got in X&Y but they made it so you're DOUBLY weak or effective. I was hoping they would be Fire/Psychic, Water/Fighting and Grass/Dark.)
I am definitely mostly hyped for the fact that the location seems to be a very nice change of pace with the island setting. I wonder if "Surf" will be acquired early on?

I will probably end up with Litten for 2 reasons: It's edgy and complements me, as I am also edgy 2 - I'm not a turbonerd enough to choose a starter that has a cool type weakness/strength combo.

The fact that, of all their franchises, Nintendo insists on keeping Pokemon the same every generation is baffling. Always a Fire/Water/Grass starter, 8 gyms, a criminal organization, and the pokemon league. Would it really be so hard to make more than 8 gyms? Come up with a different plot than "Stop Team X"? Actually have content that goes up to lvl100? Or change up the first few hours of the game so it's less Starter-centric? They seem determined to do the same thing only slightly different every time, whilst making totally unnecessary innovations on most of their other franchises which could stand to have a few more direct sequels.

Looking at it now, I'm definitely going for Pokemon Moon, though both Legendaries look absolutely awesome.
As for starters, I might go for Litten. Though that may change when I see the evolutions of the starters. At least we got a Grass/Flying starter now.

I'm not super sold on either legendary yet, although maybe they'll grow on me. The starters are all cute though.

All I can say is that if Litten doesn't grow up to be a Fire/Dark final evolution we riot.
Also I wonder if Rowlet is going to be taking the slot of our Grass starter AND our regional bird?

We saw a wireframe of something with the sillhouette of a common bird pokemon alongside the concept art of Sun/Moon at its announcement, and it doesn't match the profile of Rowlet.

I just hope with Litten that it doesn't turn into a Fire/Fighting. Seriously, if they go back to that, I might just get a bit salty.

These starters look boss . Rowlett is adorable. That bowtie is the perfect touch. Litten looks sassy but cute at the same time. Popplio is a cutie pie, too. It looks like a circus seal kinda deal, which is interesting. I'm having trouble deciding whcih one I'll go for.
This island looks like it's Hawaii/Polynesian inspired, which is super exiciting. There are a lot of Pokemon they could pull from Hawaiian myth and culture. Something volcano-based would be cool. Hawaii has a buttload of native animals to pull inspiration from, not to mention mythology.

Just popping in to say hello!
Quick rundown: psychic Pokemon fan, started playing back in R/S/E, have been playing less since college, and finally got my SO into Pokemon, at least a bit.
On the topic of Rowlett, one of my friends points out that it looks a bit like Blathers from Animal Crossing...
