It looks like a return to form to me, it's as weird and gimmicky as something you'd expect from Nintendo, but it's really self-explanatory and accessible like the Wii, rather than sort of confusing and possibly unnecessary like the Wii U. They say this isn't going to replace the 3DS but let's be real, it probably is. They've always been the kings of the handheld market, so now they're just going to make their console pitch also the handheld market .v

Yeah, it seems like one of their more accessible concepts in that it makes sense when you see it, and doesn't require tons of explanation. I'm excited about it and am really considering getting it, which is saying something because I haven't bought a new system since the Wii! My old roommate's boyfriend had a Wii U that I played a lot at least, and I liked how the Wii U controller could be used to play games too (perfect for multi-person living situations where people want to hang out and watch TV but you want to play games) so the fact that they're extending that capability to make it more portable is going to be great. I wonder how backwards compatible it will be with the cartridge system... I'd like to at least have the option to play some of the Wii U games I missed out on, even if it's on the virtual marketplace or whatever.
I was already pumped about Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but I'm especially curious about that Mario game the trailer showed... games like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine are some of the best in the series, so if there's a return to that kind of gameplay I'm going to be really happy.

So apparently there's a Skylander's show that just got put up on Netflix recently. I heard about it the same time I heard that Crash Bandicoot was getting a remake so I decided to check it out, and aside from the obviously dubbed nature of the show given that it was made by a French animation crew, it's not a half bad show. I definitely recommend checking it out, especially if you were a Spyro fan like me back in the day.

So, Moana is really good, as you might have guessed. The water and hair animations in particular are just gorgeous and the music has the Lin-Manuel Miranda touch, so it's frustratingly catchy. Made a really good compliment to playing Sun and Moon earlier in the day.

I watched Kubo and the Two Strings and liked it. (why yes, I always watch animated movies months after release. That's what I get for waiting for good online vers- I mean DVD release.) Yet to watch Moana though.
Also I'm eagerly waiting for the Miraculous Ladybug specials.

Same to all of the above. I always wait to watch movies until I can watch them at home. In theaters you can hear EVERY SINGLE COUGH and there's always that one person that doesn't turn off their goddamn phone.
The problem with Internet culture nowadays is that whenever people talk about new movies they're like "The main character is Polynesian, it's going to be so good," but I don't consider the ethnicity of the characters to be the main factor in whether the movie is good or not. They could portray the culture really badly, or they could just make a movie with a totally mediocre script. I actually wasn't even interested in watching Moana until I found out that it has no romance whatsoever. That is to me what makes it more than just another fucking Disney princess movie.

That is to me what makes it more than just another fucking Disney princess movie. The movie actually lampshades that, with Moana emphatically insisting at one point that she is not in fact a princess. The narrative is much more a mythological odyssey than fairy tale like most other Disney films as well.

I just finished rereading A Series of Unfortunate Events! I used to be OBSESSED with those books and the supplementary works as a kid, taking notes in a commonplace book on all the volumes, facts, diagrams, codes, etc. Definitely one of my pre-Homestuck obsessions. With the Netflix series coming out soon (January 13th!) I wanted to refresh my memory of the series, and I'm glad I did... I remember the end of the series feeling somewhat jarring when I read them as a kid, but the books hold up a lot better as a cohesive story and exploration of morality when read one after the other. The show looks like it's going to take some creative liberties and introduce the VFD elements earlier on, which I think will work better when taken as a whole, and Daniel Handler is one of the head writers so I have high hopes that we'll be getting some juicy tidbits and extra scenes that will make the adaptation worth it. I'm especially looking forward to seeing how the later books translate to the screen.
Now I've gotta reread "The Unauthorized Autobiography of Lemony Snicket" and "The Beatrice Letters", then for the first time read the "All The Wrong Questions" series.

I've been playing Neopets again lately with a new account. It's been a nostalgiac trip even with the site being an empty shell of its former self compared to when I've played it as a kid. I especially appreciate that Trudy's Surprise is a thing now so I won't have to worry about being poor as dirt. My current goal is to get a complete map of the Secret Laboratory so I can make a side account, and transfer the map pieces and get to zapping Pound pets so that they're more likely to be adopted.

I finally own the full Redwall collection. RIP, Mr. Jacques. Also, on a nostalgic note, I found out that this is a thing! The entire Starcraft/Brood War collection as a mod for Starcraft II, which theoretically is playable even with just the free trial version of Starcraft (Wouldn't know, I own it already.) It's hella difficult even on easy settings.

Well yeah, that was by far the best thing about WC3, having likewise replayed it not that long ago. Dear god was trying it again a drag. Everything is way too defensively tough/offensively weak. It should not take the better part of a minute for a crew of grunts wailing on a structure to destroy it. I'll stick to SC2. Legacy of the Void is actually pretty good, dunno why I haven't played it more (besides for the story being the weakest of the three)
Having seen a couple people put Stardew Valley on their best of the year lists has reminded me I should play it more. Started a Joja playthrough for variety; Jeez. 5k gold just for a membership. Gotta earn me a backpack first.

Speaking of movies, I saw like... way too many last year. I saw so many 2016 movies last year that I had to make a Top 30 list for my favorites: letterboxd.com/thedude3445/list/top-30-of-2016/ I am slowly becoming a film buff over the past year so eventually I'll be able to give you opinions you can trust kinda.

So, the Switch Presentation was yesterday. I think this sums up my feelings: If you were at the Homestuck Discord at #gaming, then you probably saw my first impressions and how I was basically freaking out about it during the presentations.
While I am very excited for it, I'm still going to keep a rational mind with it and keep my hype under control. Of course, we don't even know the technical details yet, which was something I was hoping would be explained.
Paid online sucks. Everybody can agree to that. It was just a matter of time before Nintendo followed Microsoft and Sony.
The games were the best part of the presentation, obviously. Mario Odyssey looks to be Mario 64 again (or Sunshine). From Zelda's new trailer, it looks like it's going for a more "mature" story. The story seems to be more serious than usual, which could mean that the story could be some sort of tragedy. Voice acting is great, too. Arms was a surprise! Disappointing title, awesome concept. All I'm worried with this one is execution. Awesome concept doesn't mean anything if the controls are absolute garbage. Splatoon 2! I never had a Wii U or played Splatoon, so I'm excited for this one! Sadly, paid online is going to affect online multiplayer. Also, where's Monster Hunter? Motion control is back, now more improved and with HD Rumble! The improved motion controls have me suspicious. Could it be hinting at VR? I presume that the controllers would work perfectly as VR controllers as well. There was a rumor that Nintendo was looking into virtual reality. With these controllers, I wouldn't be surprised. Virtual Boy 2?
That's all I really have to say right now about it. I probably left out some of my thoughts I had in the Discord chat.
The consensus? I am not buying it Day 1. While my thoughts above clearly show me optimistic about it, I'm still very skeptical. Not a lot of launch titles have been announced, but with the presentation over, that probably means that there's a lot more games that couldn't have been announced until after. I'll be waiting for the reviews of it. Though, I will try my friend's Switch as he's pre-ordering one.

There's only two launch titles right now from Nintendo-- Zelda and 1-2 Switch. I think Nintendo is trying for an extended launch, putting it out early to get the hype out, and then probably creating an intentional shortage like usual, and then hoping word of mouth spreads enough that it becomes a major Christmas item, complete with a much bigger library of games. I'll be picking it up at launch if possible but I'm really looking forward to the games coming up later in the year.

Anyone looking for some more in-depth analysis of the Switch, Laura Kate Dale (@laurakbuzz on twitter) has been doing a whole lotta work the past few months leaking and looking at Switch stuff that hasn't been officially announced yet. Her sources have by and large been accurate, so she's been my go-to place for Switch/NX news.

Oh my god. Uno; The movie. AKA, an amazing 200 minute long round of Uno to 500 points. So much funnier than it has any right to be. And makes me want to play Uno.

The emoji movie is now going to be a thing.
I don't think that's going to be a good movie. Still, I'll be happy to watch the critics utterly obliterate it.

I think everybody just forgot about the tetris movie.
I feel like that hints at the movie's future.
And apparently its going to be a trilogy?

Ah crap. Now we've got to worry about THREE of those disastorpieces?
(Video Game movies are just pointless. What's the point when you could just play the game?)

I think everybody just forgot about the tetris movie. I feel like that hints at the movie's future. And apparently its going to be a trilogy? The Tetris movie isn't yet in production so there isn't any marketing for it anyway. There isn't a director, actors, writers, anything but a studio that wants to make it. There's always a lot of Hollywood self-promotion with producers who really try to make themselves look better by talking about the various movies they're totally going to make, even if nothing ever comes of it. That remake of The Crow has been in development for a solid decade now, and we'll probably never see the Akira movie (which Warner Bros is so desperate about they tried to get George Miller, Christopher Nolan, and Justin Lin to direct it). I do hope there is a Tetris movie though, just to see the absurdity of how they manage to pull it off.

So I've had a couple of days with a Nintendo Switch, and I'm liking it so far. Don't think I can fully make a judgement until I see BOTW- I've just been playing Metal Slug off the e-Store- but it's well made and feels good to use.
