Ok I haven't posted on this forum in quite a while (almost 5 years now!) but I guessed my password and revived this dead account just to post this somewhere o will probably see it.

I actually stopped reading CANWC around the same time I stopped contributing to the music team (i.e. the beginning of A4), so I was really amazed to come back and see just how much had been added since then. Now that I've caught up I'm pretty sad to see that discussion had come to a halt even before the big pause started. So I thought o might just like to know that there are people still enjoying their work. As for my actual opinion on what's happened since A3? I loved Act 4. Verticle movements in particular was absolutely incredible (I've watched it 5 times already since I reached that point), and if it were a flash in actual HS I'd rank it among the top 5. A5A1 started sort of weak (the total lack of enhanced characters made it a bit of a slog to read) but finished strong. The big Aradia monologue was brilliant. The trol romants explanation had me in absolute hysterics the whole way through. Judgemant was great, yielding that quintessentially Homestuck sense of surprise at events you knew were coming!

It feels weird trying to give advice to someone who's set themselves up as some sort of inscrutable being, but, o, if you're reading this: please don't try to take on more than you can handle. The difference between bad literature and good is in how well it succeeds in what it's trying to do; the difference between good literature and great is in how high it sets its goals. This applies pretty well to the ending of Homestuck proper: it would have been a "good" ending to a lesser story, but HS had become so vast at that point that the ending failed to satisfy, and thus became "bad". Homestuck asked too many questions that it didn't answer, set up too much foreshadowing that didn't pay off. As a result, 5 years later I don't go around recommending Homestuck to people in the same way I do, say, Umineko. (Even though Episode 8 was the weakest part of Umineko, it still finished everything the previous 7 episodes started, and thus was a "good" ending.)

This is getting pretty long, sorry about that. I guess what I'm getting at is this: writing a work of fiction is like going on a long run into the Grand Canyon. The deeper you go, the more work you have to do to get back out, but the more impressive it is if you do. Homestuck made it all the way to the bottom, but made some wrong turns on the way back and left the readers stranded somewhere halfway down without water. The epilogues and other post-canon content look like a path to the surface, but really just lead in circles while mocking you for even trying to get out. My hope for CANWC is that it offers a way back to the surface. It doesn't need to get as deep as HS did, only deep enough to reach where the HS readers were left. In fact, with the recent developments (verticle and the aradia monologue in particular) it's definitely done that last part! Anyway, this metaphor's gotten away from me a bit, so I'll summarize: I'm not saying the quality should drop for the sake of telling a complete story, but please don't feel like the sort of work you've done so far isn't good enough! It really is! I just want to see more of it, and I want to see it end in a satisfying way.

And thank you for inspiring us. Don't worry, most of us definitely plan to keep making music, and some of it might even be CANWC-related, it's just that this will be the last official Volume from the whole team, although we're not ruling out something like a reunion volume in 5 years or so. Some stuff might be appearing here in the nearer future though. I'd also recommend checking out the team members' personal bandcamp pages for their unrelated solo output.
