Ah wow it's been awhile. I was starting to really lose complete interest in homestuck and my attempt in re-reading acts 1 - 5, so it's a good thing the new hiveswap trailer and the new update came (I probs will do that god tier Jade cosplay someday lol). Which reminds me, mine is actually going pretty decently, for once. I've made it as far as A5A2, which I don't think I've ever did before. (My one successful reread I cheated by continuing from the middle of the story) To be honest, I really thought the Hiveswap news was gonna be the "big thing" for the next three months, it's pretty surprising it's already been all but overshadowed by Homestuck updating. It's pretty dang exciting, not gonna lie. I realized last night that this is once again the characters being aged up to match the pace of the comic's serial run. John is exactly seven years older now than he was at the start of the story, which itself is now seven years old. It definitely makes us feel like the characters have grown up with us, even if it sort of happens all at once at the very end, but whatever. Actually, it's already been six months, so it's already in danger of falling behind again. Maybe we can let that slide though. Yeah, smashing the phone could have been a rejection of Caliborn's taunting and refusal to fight him. I mean this with the utmost of respect, but I am hoping you realize how this sounds kind of contrarian. Like, there is being thoughtful and observant and carefully studying the meanings of things, but there is the broader canon to be taken into consideration. When we've already seen our heroes will square off with the villain, so when we see the two exchange displeasantries, it's not exactly up in the air what violent gestures are supposed to imply. Which kind of reminds me of a random thought I wanted to get out, because seeing Caliborn threaten the rabbit is sort of meta and brings things full circle again. Of course, cashing in on the nonstop references to that movie and the relevance that rabbit has had in the story, and comparing the villain to that guy while John is Nic Cage. And unlike Jack, who only did it in a goofy noncanon scribbling, Caliborn actually pulled the gesture off TO John directly! There's some symbolism for you. Personally I read Roxy/Calliope's relationship as more of a maternal/big sister kind of thing, but it does seem to be left deliberately vague. Most of them are left vague actually--only Rose and Kanaya's relationship seems to be 100% confirmed as romantic, but all the others could potentially be seen as close friendships or something. I do like to think that Jake/Dirk worked things out romantically though, and that Dave/Karkat/Jade have a cute poly thing going on. I definitely get a more platonic bffs/familial bond type thing coming from the two of them, and I wouldn't even call it vague. And yeah I got that sense too, that other than Kanaya and Rose, which was totally played up for laughs and serenaded with a Trickster reception, endgame ships were totally ignored. I think I prefer it that way, and not just because I typically tend to err relationships toward the platonic side anyway (though those are some pretty cute romantic possibilities you mention as well). As much argumentation as there is already, it would probably just be worse if canon stomped all over everybody's headcanon romances and sore feelings abounded. whaddya think hussie's next project will be (i hope he'll make a new one) if he does, i really hope its user suggested Without taking the easy guess of Hiveswap or whatever mysterious SBAHJ project he's got going on, I honestly couldn't possibly guess if I tried, and I think that's for the better. I doubt many people would have guessed "kids in modern neighborhood play sims-in-real-life-type-game" after Problem Sleuth. Although honestly I think it's sort of up in the air if his next project will even be on MS Paint Adventures. I honestly doubt there is much room to incorporate individual user commands for him at this point. So, who knows? Could be anything.

I like that after all that, no straight relationships were ever confirmed. I mean, I'm straight and stuff, but I fully support LGBT+, and I do ship RoseMary and DaveKat, but why the fuck is that a good thing? Actually, the only confirmed ship is RoseMary and for fuck's sake why Hussie?! DaveKat and Roxygen were great! And now you hint at Callixy? Really? CALLIXY?! tl;dr still salty hussie F1X TH1S Because it's really funny.

by the by... aren't earth supposed to be flooded? In Act 7 we saw the planet being fast forwarded to no longer being flooded. Also Vriska said: From page 6/009439, [A6A6I5] ====> VRISKA: When you enter the new universe, you're going to need a planet to live on. VRISKA: Why not just resettle the one you all grew up on? VRISKA: The Condesce kind of fucked it up though. VRISKA: In your scratched universe, she spent a few centuries getting it ready for a new troll "paradise". VRISKA: She flooded the whole thing. So when you get there, you'll need to skip ahead to some time far in the future, when the oceans have receded.

I'm just so happy to see all these positive reactions to the flash in the thread, much more than the reactions to Act 7. I'm glad that a lot people are feeling at least slightly more satisfied now. Really, I wouldn't get my hopes up too much at all about this really taking off and doing something crazy. I'm not about to hold my breath for any flashsnaps, or any sign of Lord English. Anything remotely plot relevant I expect to be not too much grander in scale than whatever might be happening with the meteor, which we haven't even seen yet. Well, what we did get wasn't really a flashsnap, but rather a snapflash. So, close enough. Hehe, it's pretty funny reading this post after having watched the flash. Also, racial segregation is a thing? For what it's worth, John was crowned in the Human Kingdom and yet we see him living in a Salamander Village. My bet is that the Four Kingdoms 'mainly' have the people of that particular species, but there are also smaller villages and stuff with the other races inside those kingdoms. Meaning that perhaps this Salamander Village is located inside the Human Kingdom. Also, Can Town might be neutral terrain where all species completely live together with no distinction. I was thinking about this earlier today and then I kind of began comparing it to the Four Nations in Avatar: The Legend of Aang and Korra, with Republic City being a city where everyone lives together. Since that arrow at the bottom redirects to the front page, I'm going to assume it's only doing that as a placeholder. Or maybe Andrew intends it to signify that this is truly the last page of Homestuck and that there won't be any more extra pages like a blank space at the bottom of the page would indicate. (Not to mention that the background of that page is black and no links of the MSPA site are shown, so there'd be no way to click any of those without going back to the previous page, so the arrow leading back to the main page helps that too) I used to argue we wouldn't get much more than Act 7, but this reeeeally makes me think twice. I mean it's already more than I was expecting, which leaves me very pleasantly surprised. The way it ended and the attention drawn to what I have just now been inspired to refer to as The Calamity makes me think there will be yet more to come, and not as an epilogue. It's not an epilogue until the command link starts says "Epilogue." Oooh, I kinda like the sound of "The Calamity". But yeah I agree with what you're saying. After this it's easy to expect more (mostly on the Furthest Ring front), but it's best not to get too excited and for now consider it as the true ending to Homestuck until proven otherwise.
I can't work out spoiler tags so I'll just say that was fun and silly and an awesome way to do what it did. Put your text between
and
to make a spoiler. So this is what a upd8 rush feels and looks like.....beautiful. Oh man, I hadn't even considered yet that this final update would be the "first" update for people that joined since 4/13. Dang that must be a special feeling. Dunno why they felt the need for separate "kingdoms" or whatever, though, that's just asking for a race war after most of the leaders are sucked into a plot hole in a little bit here. Well, after 5000 years the total population of this world must have been enormous, so splitting it up in separate kingdoms probably makes it easier to rule. Not to mention that it probably makes it easier to keep some of the traditions of their old cultures alive. But despite that, I'm mostly very happy that the Dersites and the Prospitians didn't split up again and continue to be united as one. My only question is whether anyone here thinks Vriska is still alive. The combination with the username, avatar and the status description beneath it makes this post perfect, haha. But to seriously answer your question, I have no idea! I think she, Tavros, Meenah, Sollux and Davepetasprite^2 probably made it out alive (or uh, not double dead), but I don't know for sure. The Cyclical Story Theory: Given the amount of time travel and looping back on itself Homestuck already contains, plus the last "==>" linking back to the homepage, I wouldn't be too surprised if the comic's narrative is a Mighty Max style closed loop. But if that was the case, I think it would prolly loop back to the first proper page of Homestuck, not just the MSPA frontpage, which just so happens to include the first page. This reminds me of something I think I forgot to bring up in my reaction, namely that I think it's very appropriate that Homestuck ended with John standing alone in his bedroom, just like how it all started 7,5 years ago. Combine that with the Showtime melody at the end and the flash just before it being a reference to the very first sound flash in Homestuck, and to me it's complete. That said John seems sad, lonely (he still misses the Dad that HE grew up with, and he's seemingly the only person living alone), and more than a little bored. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if Nannasprite still lives with John in his home. so where's Jasprose? And the Nannasprites? For the Nannasprites, we see one of them standing with John, Jane and Dad in the Human Kingdom. As for Jasprosesprite^2, yeah! I wanted to bring that up in my reaction but I totally forgot. After she accepted that she was no longer Prime Rose, Davepetasprite^2 became kind of the most important person to her still around there. And they left to the Furthest Ring to fight Lord English, but just like Vriska from the perspective of the people in Universe C, they never returned. So perhaps Jasprosesprite^2 decided to do the same thing Terezi did and go search for them, out there in the Furthest Ring?

Speaking of the positive reactions...
I know I've spent much of this thread complaining about this one oddity in the ending credits, but aside from that the credits were great and redeemed much of my salt about Act 7. And to a lesser extent my salt about Davekat because (thankfully) that ship was barely addressed at all in the credits.

By the way, I would like to point out that the kingdoms are not racially segregated. They are segregated by species. Because each species actually has different needs. Also, whatever happened to the Denizensame and the Imps? Any clues?

by the by... aren't earth supposed to be flooded? Forget the flooding, there's a more pressing problem with the Earth that everyone seems to have forgotten. What about the second Gl'bgolyb that )(IC acquired from somewhere and left on Earth. Having any Gl'bgolyb at all is a huge liability to the Trolls for obvious reasons, and good luck trying to put one down without it getting upset. But on top of that, this one specifically seems to have something against Trolls since Dirk's exposition made it sound like it was deliberately countering )(IC's attempts to recreate the Troll race.

I thought it was a nice little Credit section. I'm satisfied with a lot more things than before. This was good. Not sure if it counts as the epilogue or not so I'm refraining from calling this a good ending or not. But either way I liked it.

On that note though... what about Lusii in general? We didn't really see anything about them. Are they still A Thing (and if so, where did they come from post-flood?) or has the Troll race adapted to more human familial structures? I guess you could ask the same question about Drones. Maybe that's why Dave and Jade are partial leaders of the Troll Kingdom... to help teach the troll race how to get by without all the symbiotic relationships they had with the lifeforms on Beforus/Alternia.
Or maybe the Mother Grub can produce lusii and drones as well, and we just didn't see any.

I am just saying, Caliborn's threat was "Make a move and the bunny gets it." Even though he was trying to get John to come, and had just basically invited him. I think that suggests that Caliborn did not want John to do whatever he through John was going to do (smash the phone with a hammer). I think he was just trying to egg him on, and play the part of an antagonistic villain. If I didn't know better, I'd say he was intentionally doing the reference for references sake. I think he knew it would aggravate him further though. Like, I don't think the imp that attacked John way back in act 2 really was trying to stop John from attacking him? When that imp did the "don't move or the bunny gets it" thing? I mean, it was a game construct and not thinking much of anything. But sort of a similar concept, it wants to make John its enemy. Well, what we did get wasn't really a flashsnap, but rather a snapflash. So, close enough. Hehe, it's pretty funny reading this post after having watched the flash. Man, was I wrong on that one. It sure wasn't heading in the direction I was picturing when I said that, but it did get pretty damn crazy, all things considered. And now, I've changed my opinion considerably. SOMETHING along those lines could yet be possible... but I don't wanna get too hopeful. By the way, I would like to point out that the kingdoms are not racially segregated. They are segregated by species. Because each species actually has different needs. Also, whatever happened to the Denizensame and the Imps? Any clues? This is a good point. Humans, Trolls, Carapacians and Consorts are wildly different creatures physically, physologically, sociologically. As it is, the scenes of the troll kingdom look so different I wonder if it's a different planet. Even though it's probably just night time. Since trolls are nocturnal and all. In fact, that's probably why John seemed sort of quiet on his 19th birthday. He said it was late, and was in bed. Due to the time difference, She probably woke him up and he was half awake while answering. Plus, who knows how big the combined population of four species that could each singlehandedly occupy a single planet is after 5000 years. One kingdom would be a clusterfuck. Each of those kingdoms is probably the territory of a quarter of the planet. Anyway, It's very doubtful the kingdoms disallow other species from visiting or living there if they want. Three of them have other species as their leaders, and the carapacian and consort kingdoms, if I recall correctly, don't even have matching royalty species at all. Speaking of, it occurred to me last night that Dave and the others must have had a hard time saying goodbye to WV and PM to build the society. They're long dead 5000 years later. There's a sad thought for you. If there are any creatures I wouldn't expect to carry through the game, it'd be underlings. Denizens are tied to their planets as well, and are heavily tied into the plot of Sburb so that doesn't surprise me either. Honestly, I wouldn't have given consorts a kingdom even, for similar reasons. But they are pretty innocent and not necessarily tied into the game so much. They were thrown a bone I think, given a chance to live without being a setpiece in someone else's grand quest. Since I can't stop with my additional random thoughts on the flash, I'll put this last one (FOR NOW) here. Considering John and co. went to the meteor to do the ectobiology work, this suggests to me the game does not supply a way to do this typically. Makes me wonder if you're generally given the opportunity to revive your species. Or if you just have to go find the equipment and do it yourself each time. At least if that's the case it was a simple job this time. They put a planet with no population in isolation for at least thousands of years so the water would evaporate. A city-sized creature that lives underwater and needs constant sustenance it cannot provide for itself isn't going to outlast that length of time. Problem solved. Good question actually, a logical extension of the consequences of the above. Lusii and drones both seemed ideal for a more brutal authoritarian society, one which revolved around survival of the fittest and purging of the weak. Perhaps the Earth C troll variants are less attached to this dynamic? It would be funny if the instinct is still there and trolls just take on beastly Earth animals as pets/guardians. Which actually makes me wonder what the Earth C animal kingdom looks like after many thousands of years since an apocalyptic scenario leaves its mark on the evolutionary tree...... Also, I bet before long the civilizations must be advanced enough to start colonizing other worlds and branching out further. If not already, then perhaps in the relatively near future. That's probably why there is a trollplanet for Caliborn's father to eventually destroy. ARGH I WANT TO BE LESS RAMBLY BUT THERE'S JUST SO MUCH COOL POSSIBILITIES TO THINK ABOUT AND DISCUSS.

I think maybe Carapaces are biologically immortal. If there are any creatures I wouldn't expect to carry through the game, it'd be underlings. Denizens are tied to their planets as well, and are heavily tied into the plot of Sburb so that doesn't surprise me either. Still, the Imps seemed pretty exist-y and civilized on the ship for those three years, it just does not seem fair that the consorts get what they do not. And it seems to me that SBURB would not just make things stop existing, so SOMETHING had to happen to them, and the denizens, and the minions of the denizens. I could see the rest of the underlings just being wiped out by the kids, eventually, since they show no signs of being able to be reasonable, but I do not see them wiping out the imps, and I still want to know what happened to the denizens.

I think maybe Carapaces are biologically immortal. I don't think it was ever actually established that they lived for long periods of time. The main evidence for that was just that A) The exiles are around long after the bulk of the reckoning and B) WV doesn't have very good memory. which isn't a very compelling argument. Since I seem to be in the mood to try and spin this utopia into a dystopia, I'm going to headcanon that the Imps were sent into a secret, underground 5th kingdom that isn't allowed above ground.

Since I seem to be in the mood to try and spin this utopia into a dystopia, I'm going to headcanon that the Imps were sent into a secret, underground 5th kingdom that isn't allowed above ground. I doubt they'd mind that though. But if they really were inconvenienced, I think they'd find a way to become very annoying. I don't see why the underlings really need any kind of freedom. They literally convert into grist upon death, which makes them about equivalent to random objects. And they strike me as about as intelligent as clever animals, consorts I think are already pushing the limits of intelligence requisite to uphold a complex society. There's very, very little underlings really have to offer to... anything. Maybe you could keep them as a pet. That's pretty much how they're treated when they aren't used as murder fodder. As for the exiles. I mean, enough time to build a city is one thing, but 5000 years is longer than any single civilization has persisted on earth. It's fifty centuries, a longer unit of time than we've proven anything has lived that wasn't omnipotent. We don't see any sign of them in the future, you think we would if they were still alive.

Remember Rose remarking on how building up one's house into a skyscraper is actually trivial thank to copy-paste? Plus, I don't think Slick would build a city for nothing, pretty sure there is a population of other exiles there who could've helped.

Whatever the exiles arrived in probably did too. Even if they don't have the exact Sims-style building system of the Sburb server, the alchemiters would still save huge amounts of time and effort.

The Troll's meteor had multiple Alchemisation suites in it. Whatever the exiles arrived in probably did too. Even if they don't have the exact Sims-style building system of the Sburb server, the alchemiters would still save huge amounts of time and effort. When did the exiles ever have access to grist? Jane, while on earth, could turn random objects into Grist. It appears that Grist isn't just a game construct in Homestuck
