Greetings From Earth C: Post-canon content discussion!

I guess it might be because it's just hard for me to associate him with new things that came out "after his time" e.g. after his period being active on social media, which is a ridiculous notion but this is just how my awful brain reconciles things like this I guess.

Ooooh, nice I didn't know about that site. Yeah, I own all 3 old HS books too but I got the first new edition cuz I love complete sets like that. It's a rough life. Oh well, at least only one book is a total repeat. (And yes the commentary is mostly the exact same between editions)

The covers on the new editions are not by Andrew. Adrienne Garcia is the one credited for drawing them. Though, someone named Adam Grano is credited with "cover and graphic design" so it may be he kind of makes a layout and Adrienne draws the final picture based on that? And that probably works the same way for this next book cover, and the ones after that, too.

I think the books are the same or very similar aspect ratio, though they're a little bigger in size I believe, and hardcover obviously.



Oh, and I come here with more news. Remember that interview I linked to the other day? Well What Pumpkin did a cool thing and uploaded the uncut version of all his answers to their questions in a pastebin file, so there's a whole lot more to chew on, including a little about the epilogue, in just about the only possible way he could acknowledge that. Anyway, here it is folks.

What a fuckin' bummer.

Alongside Doctor, he also wrote Showtime and Endless Climb, two more of my absolute faves.

I am a forgetful man, but hearing that curious, eerie, triumphant track swell as I discovered that John was me, and would be piloted by me on his cardinal romp of LOWAS is a feeling that, even after 6 years, I have never forgotten.

On another note, Very intresting post on Homestuck tech by obsidalicious a bit back. I always thought that the ability to expand and improve one's sylladex would be limited by income. John's cartirge majigger was packaged as a gift, after all. If I had to guess, given how prolific and useful sylladicies are in-universe, I'd mark them at the price of a very expensive games console. Maybe even something crazy like the Neo Geo's $650 launch price.

Happy 10th Anniversary of Homestuck! I can't believe the epilogue is here? Sort of?

The AO3 format was fuckin' weird at first but it kinda makes sense now after Rose's lengthy, and rather confusing, speech about canon. I'm a little disappointed we'll most likely be getting a text-only format but at this point I'll take what I can get.

Also I found it odd how there was no words from Hussie himself on the news page. I only knew about the epilogue because I checked the site to see if he said anything regarding the 10 year anniversary and was surprised by the huge epilogue button! (I don't use Twitter so if he said anything there or elsewhere, my bad)

But yeah I'd like to know what we can expect with this in terms of updates and stuff? After all this time I thought a complete epilogue would just get posted all at once but here we are waiting again...hmm.

Anyway where is everyone, has the fandom died that much that no one is talking about this lol? It seems like a big deal to me! It's like Rose was saying about how when you diverge from canon too much you get forgotten, or something like that. (I'm still having trouble processing all of what she was saying.) It made me wonder if that was a reference to the fandom losing interest and not being as big and active as it used to.

When I saw the fanfic format and the endless wall of content warnings I thought it was a joke for a minute, not helped by the incredibly pretentious opening paragraph, soon to be proven wrong of course. I was confused by the artistic direction, but the tone of the story soon proves it was the right call. The moment that really jumps out at me that suits it perfectly that couldn't really be done any other way is John's thoughts about Roxy. That kind of somber introspection just wouldn't be possible in another format, and the lack of visuals, rather than feeling like an absence, only serves to enhance the mood.

I love the tone and subject matter that it covers, at least what it has covered so far, in the prologue of the Epilogue. (Epilogues, plural, actually). The intensely meta stuff is all really good, and the way the characters feel about that, and what they have to do, and all of it is really solid. Plus, seeing what they're like, grown up, living their lives.

Mostly for the sake of not being disappointed after the nature of Homestuck's ending, I kind of always held that the Epilogue, at best, would be mostly irrelevant stories, maybe not even about our main characters, except in some distant or indirect way, that wouldn't really answer any questions the ending declined to answer. So what we're now finally, actually getting has already greatly surpassed my expectations in ways I wouldn't have expected, and now I'm very excited to see where this goes. I can't wait. Luckily, seems like we won't have to for long. It's good to be a Homestuck.

Okay, couple things, first, I believe a character HAS mentioned canon in the story before. John, of course, is the one to say it, it's how he describes his retcon powers. I think he says "unstuck from canon."

(Taking a look, it seems like the only times he actually says anything about that is here and here, but... still?) Either way, certainly not anywhere near the level it's being addressed here, in a candid, serious, both meta but also meaningful in a "we are not fictional characters" kind of way to the... uhh, characters. Really good stuff.

Second, I agree about that thought on relevance and the meaning of the line. Not much to say there, that's just how I saw it too.

As for my own thoughts, it seems likely to me that the story will, in fact, offer us a choice. Whether we want to eat "meat" or "candy". I think this is why the Epilogues are referred to in the plural, and why the logo is split down the middle. This has to do with a comment Andrew makes in the printed book series, where he refers to his meat/candy storytelling dichotomy. It's not tremendously explicit, but the basic gist of it is that "meat" refers to the sensational Big Moments in the story the EoA flashes and such, and that "candy" therefore is character development and shipping and such. It seems like it's the same basic logic in the epilogue/s as well, with the additional tinge that neither will be such a simple thing to consume.

There's what I think is a fairly obvious double meaning to the metaphors they use and what it'll mean for the choice you and John make. "Meat" almost certainly means John will go on his quest, and "Candy" means he will perhaps stay behind and hang out with his friends instead. The "meat" will most likely involve stuff relevant to the alpha timeline, Lord English, dangling plot threads and holes that need touching up on. But without doubt it will be bloody, involve sacrifice, and even beyond that, the answers to questions that have been on our minds for all these years may be, as the text says "tough to chew, tougher to swallow."

Conversely, the "candy" route will focus on the characters and what they're going through. Maybe solidify just what their relationship arrangements are, how they think and feel about various things. In other words, learning more about them. But eating too much candy can make you sick. There might be things we'll learn that route that maybe some people will wish they hadn't. On top of that, choosing this path will also have consequences for everyone since John won't be leaving to close the remaining loops.

Of course, most likely, we'll get to choose both paths and observe their results at our leisure. But John doesn't get to, and his friends get to live with the consequences of his choice as well. It reminds me of the condition he had to accept when he confronted Typheus. And namely, whether he faced said condition at that time to fix Game Over, or if that always referred to this choice.

ROXY: that either i could stay behind and vanish into nothingness forever, and everyone in the new reality would inherit all the bigtime responsibilities, including a version of myself who had no memory of any of this and never experienced all the loss and sadness i just went through

ROXY: but in doing so, everyone i loved would know that loss instead
ROXY: w/e that means......
JOHN: yeah!
JOHN: typheus gave me almost the exact same sort of choice
JOHN: something about other people feeling the loss i felt, if i accepted his challenge.

Hrmmm, looking at it, I dunno if it fits exactly. Just thinking out loud there.

Anyway, while there's no precise word on when the next installment is coming, apparently the whole thing is finished already, so my personal guess is we'll be getting updates daily, probably around the same time the prologue dropped, which was just about 11 hours ago at the time of writing this.

As for the forum... I think a lot of people have moved on from the fandom, which is only natural since the story ended and all. Eventually, topics to discuss just kind of dried up around here, so it makes sense things got quiet. And in general I think for some reason people are moving away from the forum format in general? I think that's a contributing factor as well. Plus, maybe this place was just never all that well known. It was mostly made for people who were already members of the MSPA Forum so they could continue to hang out and talk about Homestuck ending. I guess hence the name.

I'm staying here till it is confirmed finished. Partly because I'm curious, and partly because I am way to stubborn wanting an answer to the classpect conundrum.

The fact that classpects were mentioned in the first few pages of the epilogue has me hopeful on that.

That said, I loved the explanation between non-canon, canon, etc. It was a really great way of thinking.
