Hello guys, this is the Worldbuilding Thread! If anyone has questions or need help with the mechanics of their world whether it's about magic or the people or whatever else in their stories, this is the best place to ask them.
This is also a great place to gush about your worlds if you want to.

crossroads is the greatest thing ive done on this site in a while. though, after it was discontinued, me and beb started to grow distant, then he just stopped coming online. he was the art man and I was the script writer.

So you wrote the story, what was the world in it like? What sorta things happened there? Was it a Homestuck-esque story? Or was it something original?

You seem like a person who knows his way around furry stuff- Say I have a world that has a bunch of anthros, but unlike zootopia its not just mammals but avians and reptiles etc. Because of this there's a real problem of predators hunting and eating other people for meat. This leads any omnivores and the herbivores to try and make artificially created meat and they succeed leading to a or or less modern technology era.
My question is is this too weird? The idea is though that for most of the obligate carnivores fish doesn't cut it.

The idea is though that for most of the obligate carnivores fish doesn't cut it. Well, no, not really. This sort of topic's pretty much been questioned almost always whenever you're talking about wholly animal societies. Heck, tropes such as Carnivore Confusion and Furry Confusion exist because of these questions. Quite often, the way you tackle this question depends on how light or dark you want your story to be, and if this question is in the forefront of your story or not. In Zootopia, in fact, other than fish, insects have been considered as meat alternatives as well. (If you think about it, it makes sense, and considering that advocates of an insect diet in real life would also point out that they tend to have more protein than most typical meats today. It could very well be something that other herbivores would rally towards) Another might be to make a distinction between "sapient" animals and "non-sapient" animals. In this case, you're going to have the "Goofy and Pluto" issue where you have a pet that is the same species as a friend or a character in the story. In these cases, it's best to explain how or why this kind of thing exists in-story, else you just introduce weirdness. If the problem of meat still can't be solved using alternatives. You could dwell on the implications of a society that allows predation in order to stabilize society. Quite a few stories tackle this if I recall. "Beastars" and "Kevin and Kell" are two that come to my head at the moment. Though in some of these cases, the way they answer this question can be... even more questionable at best. The former story makes mention that the animal meat they source in the "black market" comes from morgues and hospitals which... makes for very questionable meats... (I mean, sure you could consider them dead but... there's a lot of health and sanitary concerns...) The way they treat the action of predation might also be something to consider. If it's considered a reprehensible crime, or something that is common and ordinary in society.

(I mean, sure you could consider them dead but... there's a lot of health and sanitary concerns...) The way they treat the action of predation might also be something to consider. If it's considered a reprehensible crime, or something that is common and ordinary in society. i mean the idea is that its an outdated practice, hunting other people for meat and its considered murder in their society today. At some point there was a large war and there were considerable loses on both sides, making it so that there weren't as many predators to threaten the herbivores and not as many prey animals to feed the predators. In the end there were more herbivores/omnivores on their side to make it so they won. Genetics is basically the most advanced science in this world, with things like computers and the like falling to the wayside as a bunch of people got together to make the lab grown meat and stop the war. Towards the end they ended up making pill supplements for the time being and a few years later were able to make meat proper.
cough spoilers cough they just figured out cloning cough I just want to avoid the idea of "lesser" animals? like there's not gonna be a dog anthro and a regular dog at any point. Most of the crux of any social/political tension comes from the prey/predator dynamic and the idea that the obligate carnivores are really looked down upon by anyone who isn't one. Omnivores being high and mighty because they "chose" to be good. There's still some parts of the world that are un-developed/cant afford the fancy replacement meat so there's a lot of hunting packs and really messed up things going on in those corners of the world. Its still kinda up in the air though, I've never written anything down and only have a few characters designed. At somepoint there's a supernatural element? Maybe?? hold on thats a good way to introduce hybrids and dragons and shit.... I don't know, the first idea was a slice of life without any heavy stuff, then it was "oh man I made a mouse scientist and I want her to do sketchy stuff" and then it became all that AND main character got a demon roommate along with weird shit happening around them.

No problem with that! It's your choice how you wish to populate your world after all Anyway, yeah these days there are experiments of using actual animal cells to grow certain parts for cooking and eating. It's still really expensive but the next step that scientists have been working on is making them a lot more affordable for people. Usually, that means finding ways of mass producing lab-grown meat. But otherwise, considering that your story is supposed to start out as a slice-of-life, I guess that sorta thing happens at the wayside. It would certainly affect how people talk to each other (ala the Omnivores thing, also privilege check), but it wouldn't concern the main character unless it is something they're supposed to be concerned about. The supernatural element of the story also seems to indicate that the main problem of the characters isn't exactly the people-eat-people part of the world. As for hybrids, chimeras, and dragons, a supernatural angle is certainly a way to go about it, but what if that exists because of the aforementioned advancements in genetics as well? Would there be some form of disgust towards that notion? Is there a taboo on interspecies relationships? How far from their genetic lineage can they go before it is considered an "interspecies relationship"? So, for a dog family, would it be limited only to their breed? To their species, or would relationships with wolves be acceptable? If they start a relationship with a fox or a coyote, would it be then considered too far, or since they're still within the "Canis" family, they're still A-Ok?

Now this may not be my place, but if you did go with inter-species relationships, how would the children from these "natural" relationships look or act? If an omnivore got with a omnivore, would they be especially shunned?
And if you want to avoid lesser animals, you could try a "societal" lesser instead? While predators may be looked down upon by those of equal or higher rank, those who are the dregs of civilization such as beggars and the diseased could be treated like their wild animal counter-parts for example.
This is assuming that the world you are making is based on our own heavily enough that they could be called parallels to each other. Even if genetics are a high end science (for us,) there is no reason to have our same governmental structure. You could have the modern high-class and low-class of today, only implied that it makes a MUCH bigger difference in your world than ours with what class you are put in. Maybe royal blood ties are important parts of your world, and they can be put into high-class immediately, while those of criminal descent are automatically low class.

For inter-species relationships it depends on whos getting with who, a deer and a horse wouldn't be really looked down upon, but a bird with a dog? now that is scandalous. Only people of the same genus/family can actually have genetic children. I just brought up hybrids as a thing to myself...I doubt there's actually gonna be naturally occurring hybrids within the story unless its plot relevant. Adoptions not unheard of though, and there's a lot of community parenting anyway with herd animals. For your second point, beggars and the like are treated pretty much the way we do. It depends from person to person and from place to place. For government stuff the idea is that its kinda parallel to ours. There's the same landmasses and locations (the main characters from Scotland, studying abroad in America). Most of the "modern" governments are parliaments or councils with voting and all that jazz. Again there are parts of the world that are still sort of ran in a lopsided way, tyrannical kings, massive cults, oppressive presidents ETC. bbassicly the idea is, its now, but with mostly 80s-90s tech and fuzzy people and its all sorts of fucked up in certain ways. (Re: systematic cannibalism) Really lots of stuff could change, I still don't know what the basic story is going to be, what format im going to tell the story in, and if its even worth my time Any large projects I have worked on I've had to abandon in the planning stages. I have a comic with a script and a bunch of thumbnailed pages but no time or resources to devote to it.

Alright, fair enough. Still interested on what you meant by "systemic cannibalism" and how that affects the way predator and prey relationships work. For one, does that mean that predators hold higher positions than prey animals or is it vice versa?
Another thing is that depending on the species, some carnivores might actually prefer fish or insects to meat. Waterfowl (most birds save birds of prey actually), otters, and anteaters come to mind. In those cases, I assume that they're treated on the same sort of level as omnivores in your world, in that due to their specific diets, they actually are considered more civilized? Would they also be considered as ambassadors to carnivores in order to lessen the negative image that they seem to elicit?

new line of discussion, I want to make my maid of breath's world be mad up entirely of sky islands all floating independently of each other. i have created ways to traverse the world, and even kinda ways to not get lost in this ever changing landscape, but then as i was presenting it to a friend, they asked a question that i have not been able to come up with a way to get around it. so now i present the question to you
how would the gate system work/building the house immensely high work in a world like that?
few ideas i have had have all had problems. A) i could find a way to explain that the island her house is on is always the highest for some reason, and therefore it doesn't have to worry about islands crashing into it, the problem here is that i have already established that all the islands are always moving in all three dimensions, and im not a fan of making exceptions just for game mechanic's sake
B) I could just let her deal with the problems, and as part of her quest find a way to keep all the other islands from colliding with her house, but would that be to much work to set up
neither of these deal with the fact that with her house continually moving, how would the gates that are normally above her house work?
Any advice would be helpfull

Well maybe the house island works similarly to how Jane's house floats atop a helium balloon. It only seems to go up and down because it's floating inside a hole in the land large enough to accommodate it. The large landmass itself might be moving as well.
Another idea is if there is a pattern inside the chaos of movement among the floating islands. Like one example might be that they always revolve around the planet's core even though they freely float, meaning that they don't just fly off into space and crash into another player's land, or Skaia. You can think of other limits that you could impose on the islands (Like perhaps the Denizen of the planet slumbers in the core and their snores make the islands fly off into dangerous directions.)
As for the gate system, I could see two ways:
1) Make it so that even though it's floating, the house island actually sits close to the same height as the houses of players in other lands.
2) You don't really need to fuss about it considering the great distance between her land and Skaia. Even if her house floats close to the tip of her land's atmosphere, there's still a considerable distance to accommodate the seven gates.
Either way, you probably also worry that the house might descend or fly in another direction while building is under progress. Well, one way of preventing that could be that the Maid's job is to make her land a bit more stable somehow. Mayber her house is affixed to a number of chains, or the example in the first paragraph above. Maybe there's some kind of console or puzzle going on with the islands. Like your player might be able to manage the way certain islands move as to prevent the house from being hit. Either the house island itself, or some gigantic shield islands or something

ok, the big question to the gates was not so much the up and down, but more the left/right/forward/backward motions, but I can see using the part about her stabilizing her planet, that's more or less why I chose a chaotic planet in the first place, so I'll find a way to have her stabilize her planet in such a way so her house settles underneath all the gates.
thanks for the help
