Hello all, Swampmist here! I have been working on a story based on Homestuck for a while here, and am finally happy with how the pilot turned out. So, this will be where I post the chapters, anecdotes, and short stories for my story: A Conflict of Personality. I'm always looking for C&C, so feel free to post away!
Short 1: "Our lives are a tragedy"
Two people, one male and the other female, are sent flying through the brush, tumbling through the air and coming to a hard stop in a patch of foliage a good twenty feet away from where they had just been. The two hunker down, barely containing their groans of pain. With a roar, a massive beast erupts from where they had just been, twin mouths screaming with saw-like teeth flashing in the harsh light of dusk. The creature pads along on huge quadrupedal legs while flicking its twin, cat-like tails. It sniffs around for a second, roars again and trots back the way it had come before.
The people crawl back into the foliage, and emerge on the other side in a small clearing. The boy is slightly taller than the female, with shaggy brown hair and rimless glasses covering his brown eyes. He is wearing loose jeans and a white t-shirt with brown sleeves and a pair of glasses emblazoned in brown on the front.. He sits down roughly on a log, and the girl sits across from him. She has long, strawberry-blond hair that curls at the ends and green eyes, and is wearing blouse and knee-length shorts. The girl stares at the boy in silence for a moment, then speaks up.
“Well, oh fearless leader, what’s the plan this time?” she smirked, keeping her voice low enough that the boy could hear without alerting the creature that had just been chasing them. The boy looked at her through his hands, and sighed letting them fall.
“Piss off, Diana, you know as well as I do that the plan was going perfectly fine.” Diana rolls her eyes, and shakes her head slightly.
“Oh yes, the plan was a total success, you know, right up to the point when the monster’s eggs hatched…”
“Hey, how was I supposed to know that it was hatching season?!” The boy throws up his hands, and turns his head to look back the way they had come. His shoulder slump slightly, and Diana frowns, feeling the negativity seep off of her friend.
“H-Hey, Willy, don’t worry, ok? We’ll get it next time, for sure. Some of those eggs didn’t even hatch! We just need to wait a-and…” she trails off, seeing him continue to stare off into the distance. She begins to get up, but he turns around slowly and shakes his head lightly, slumping back against the tree behind him and looking up to the single opening in the harsh canopy above their heads.
“We were such idiots.” Will weakly smacks the tree behind him with his fist “We could have done so much more, made new weapons. Heck, we could have just snuck up and night and took one of the freaking eggs!” At this, Diana almost jumps up.
“We are NOT petty thieves! I’m not gonna skulk around at night… Why are you laughing?!” Will has his face turned straight to the sky, and is guffawing loudly, tears streaming down his face. Diana takes a step back, her face contorting in a mixture of confusion and rage, And Will lets his head drop and wipes his tears away, before continuing.
“You just proved my point for me, Di. We are such conceited idiots, too busy with our pride to actually do our goddamn job!” He smashes the tree again, this time forcefully enough to cause it to shake, and an arm-length branch to drop out of the tree and smack him on the top of his head. He grabs his head in his hand, and Diane bursts out laughing, falling back onto the log she was sitting on just moments before and laughing hysterically. Will slides down the tree, and begins to do the same. They sit there for a few seconds, laughter ringing out around them, until Will peters off and stands back up.
“We really are part of a tragedy, aren’t we? Our whole life’s a gib show, and somewhere an audience is applauding at our misfortune.” Will shakes his head again, and steps over to Diane, and holds out his hand. She smirks back to him, and grips his hand tightly. He pulls her up, and shakes her hand once before they both look to the way they had come.
“Well then,” Diane cracks her knuckles, and in a flash her shield and battle-axe are in her hands, and an aura of protective energy has formed around her, “Let’s give ‘em a show they’ll never forget!”
“Yes, let’s.” Will taps the holsters at his waist, feeling the weight of his pistols, and smiles broadly.
With a scream of defiant pride, the two charge out of the clearing, and with a roar the monster charges forth to meet them.
