Hmm... Conflicting information about the Barrier/Rifts. Possibly because all information given is vague. Curious about the real nature of the world/s.

You realise that is the whole setting right?  Now I did read all the visible text in that book that Nino picked up in the library, even though some evil person had changed it to the greek alphabet and mirrored it. I gave myself a headache reading that without deciphering it first. XD If I recall correctly it said that there was a big war between the humans and monsters that was stopped by a human using their ability to create the Barrier. So, did the Humans, Monster and Winged all live on one world? Or is it multiple worlds where you can cross between them? Does the Barrier stop movement between worlds, or does it divide the world in two in some way? The night sky seen once by Aria shows lines of something across it. I presume that is the barrier? Now why I'm a little puzzled: I have no idea where it was mentioned, but I'm sure it was mentioned that the Barrier was weakening. It appears that from the Human side, it is really easy for any kid to get to the Monster side. Yet Suvillan appears to think that its hard to travel from the Human side to the Monster side? And finally: How does anyone put up with Corona? (The greatest mystery of the story so far.) |

Multiple worlds. This is all detailed in the following:
After the war, it was separated into two halves by the Human warrior's ability. The separation made it impossible (at the time of the barrier's creation) to pass through from one world to another. And not only did it separate humans from monsters, it also encompassed both in a dome, covering up the sky. Now, that is essentially when and where Oceanfalls is taking place.
Six years after the barrier's creation, the story starts with Nino in the monster half of the dome - and as of recently he has moved into the human half of it.
As for the Winged, they have their own world too. To detail it with what's already available, here's this passage from Rigmarole of Oshen:
"Using her ability, the Human warrior set a great divide between the two worlds, and trapped both in a dome, away from the watchful eyes of the Winged.”
As well as this page, which gives their world a name: The Winged overworld.
So to sum it up: Humans and Monsters used to live together in a midworld, which is now separate into two. The Winged come from a completely different world called an overworld, and it's literally that. It resides over the midworld of Humans and Monsters, therefore making the winged watch over the two. When the barrier and dome were erected, they separated the three worlds and made moving between them difficult.
You have instances of people stuck (both by their own choice and not) in worlds they don't come from, like Aria and Corona in the Monster world. Aria never found a way through to the Human world, and Corona couldn't fly through the dome back to the Winged overworld. (Not that she seems to want to.)
That should explain it all. I am aware there's little known about the Winged, but the story will tell more details about them and their world since we now have Corona, Kaji, and soon, Thiefgirl. (Also, the sky in Oceanfalls usually has visible lines across it, that is the dome's interior. And the barrier is the line in the middle of the two worlds - the part with the rifts. You can see this all here! The only instances without the lines are flashbacks to times before the dome + barrier.)
Now why I'm a little puzzled: I have no idea where it was mentioned, but I'm sure it was mentioned that the Barrier was weakening. Yes, that was mentioned in Aria's conversation with Nino here. Nino wonders how he could've gotten through the barrier, and Aria answers as follows:
"Aria: At the time the divide was created, it was very strong. Aria: But as years went by, it started thinning out. Aria: There are rumors about multiple secret openings in it... Aria: You probably passed through one of them! Aria: Well, those rumors are nothing for certain, but that's the only explanation I can think of."
Taking Nino's situation and this incident into account, it does sound like it's easy to pass through at first, but that's not entirely right. {S} Proceed shows Nino passing through one, and what happens right after he does?
Considering how small the rift appears to be, and how it doesn't stay open forever, and even it's location (beneath the ground!), it's nothing that easy to find. It's uncommon enough that Aria thought rifts were a mere rumor while talking to Nino. It's also implied that the child in the incident passing through one is nothing short of a coincidence. She stumbled into one while playing, rather than her deliberately seeking to find any.

He does know that it's simple enough to cross for one person if they randomly found a rift and stepped through it, like the child in the incident. As seen with Nino in {S} Proceed and the pages after it, it's likely that the rift then would simply close and they'd be trapped off in that side. A single lost Human is no threat to a whole kingdom of Monsters - That's very easy to get rid of. Suvillan isn't worried about stray cats, seeing how he would've just handwoven it away if it was only that. But he believes it could be more, possibly due to how unusual the presence of the mosquito was.
"Solis: It's such an easily detectable presence, which is why we're lead to think it's a dangerous human."
In the conversation with Corona from the latest updates, what Suvillan's worried about is not one person but multiple people. A whole army of humans, for instance.
You couldn't get a big organized army to pass through a normally occuring rift, if it's so small AND it also closes up eventually. The only way would be to somehow intentionally make an opening so big and permanent enough to use for multiple people.
The rest of the conversation implies that Suvillan is somehow able to accomplish a feat exactly like that with Corona's power, and that humans weren't able to do the same because they presumably don't have anyone like her. Then he wonders if they could have discovered some way to do it as of now without someone or something exactly like Corona, etc etc.
And finally: How does anyone put up with Corona? (The greatest mystery of the story so far.)
By force.  Anyway, I hope that answers things! It's my first time doing anything like this, so I went into detail because I don't want it to seem like I'm making anything up  It's all already there.... But maybe just not yet clear enough, haha... Whoops. I promise everything will be clearer as these updates come, though!! And asking questions like this is always fine if something is too confusing. |

Its been a couple of years, so I had forgotten a few things.
I had suspected the Rifts were temporary and fickle, but the part that is shown when Nino was unconscious and falling after the Corona fight made me wonder if that really was the case.
