So this was a thread from the old forums. Participation was dwindling, but I'd love to see it completed and maybe the new forum situation could help revitalize the project! Basically, everyone takes turns filling in a cell, ultimately creating a complete picture (full rules and information below). Unfortunately, the history is lost (Edit: Some of it can still be found through the wayback machine at least), but this is how far we had progressed on the old forums: Rules:1. After an addition is made, you may call dibs to put in your addition. 2. If you haven't added anything within a half hour of calling dibs, your dib is forfeit and someone new can dib. 3. There is no queue for dibs; if someone has already called dibs, you cannot dib until they either make their addition or run out of time. 4. You can only add one cell per addition. 5. One cell includes a white square plus one pixel width of the grid surrounding it (10x10 pixels). You must fill in the entire cell and, unless correcting what is clearly a mistake, you cannot change anything outside the cell. Important Notes:This image is intended to tile. If you're adding a cell on an edge of the image, be sure it fits with the corresponding cell on the other side. Since in this project additions accumulate over time, it is very important that the precise colors are preserved. Please check to ensure the blue "sky" background in most of the image is #6bacff. If it isn't, either you or someone before you has messed up the colors. If you think you messed up the colors, please ensure the following: - If you copy an image directly from the browser into your editor, it will take the browser's interpretation of the colors rather than the actual colors. Make sure that you download the image and open the downloaded image in the editor instead.
- Ensure that your editor is set to save and open things in RGB format; how to do so varies from editor to editor.
- It is unlikely the image hosting site you use will change the colors, but it is possible, so if all else fails you can compare the original file with a copy of it downloaded from your hosting site just to check.
If you wish to correct the colors someone else has messed up, the best thing to do is to get the last image before the color shift and add in what has been added since with colors changed as necessary.

The colors are totally shot, for the record. There have been a number of people using blurry tools. To be honest, I think it might be a good idea to start fresh, with larger blocks. One reason I've seen similar activities die on other forums is that they sort of devolve into referencey stuff that doesn't actually work together if the main idea isn't holding together. And the 10x10 blocks don't give enough room to do very much, even if they're easier to fill. I'd love to see something like this really take off, and certainly to participate if it got off the ground again.

Yeah, I'm wondering how people even reached this much coordination with drawings by filling in 10x10 cells one by one.

The colors are totally shot, for the record. There have been a number of people using blurry tools. It's true that the colors have been distorted a bit from the original, but I wouldn't call them "totally shot." And after a certain point the thread got better at preserving the colors, meaning while the early additions may be a bit messed up, most of it is at least pretty close to being true to what was added. (And using "blurry tools" doesn't matter in preserving the colors so long as it's always saved as a png.) To be honest, I think it might be a good idea to start fresh, with larger blocks. One reason I've seen similar activities die on other forums is that they sort of devolve into referencey stuff that doesn't actually work together if the main idea isn't holding together. And the 10x10 blocks don't give enough room to do very much, even if they're easier to fill. To be honest, I really like the smaller cell size as it forces interaction between additions. In other places I've seen things like this with larger cell sizes, it just seemed too easy to make each cell it's own thing rather than integrating it into the picture as a whole. With this one, for instance, look at the blue building-like thing just below left of middle. Someone made the red hexagon with blue border, then someone else put it at the top of a tower-like thing, then someone else continued the design downward, then someone else made a "room" to the left with colored people in it. Then someone else put in the blue person being killed by the red one. With bigger cell sizes, you wouldn't get this level of cells building off each other. Really though, the main reason I'd like to see the current version finished is just effort justification; we've simply gotten too far and accomplished too much to just abandon it and start anew.

Oops, ignore the colors thing--I misread the first post entirely. That's what I get for staying up late. There are some definite areas of continuity here, they're just kinda matched or overmatched by a similar volume of purely random content. Perhaps an alternative approach would be to require that any new tiles be adjacent to previous ones rather than having so many isolated blocks. But of course it's all up to you.

This is definitely something that needs to be finished. It was being built piece by piece on the forums for years. Can't let it end now. Added a square in the tunnel area in the bottom right, near the honk.

Alrighty! Continuing in the spirit of "time for less meta and more beta" here's another little contribution: another arm for that orange-haired Megaman.

Headless guy is headless no more! ...That was a burnt from the game Off. It was the project I was working on before the forums went down and was planning to finish it up starting now... But whatever. The possibility of projects getting messed up is all part of the fun. I'll still put in this other cell I had planned around there:

Sorry about that. Feel free to swap them out if you'd like--I'm just using this as a way to procrastinate, so I don't mind tossing it or moving it elsewhere if that was something you were looking forward to. And speaking of procrastination: No doubt mucking up another reference here (that's probably going to happen on all but the most obvious, and Snap from Chalk Zone).

Don't worry about it; as I said, the possibility of projects getting messed up is all part of the fun. No doubt mucking up another reference here (that's probably going to happen on all but the most obvious, and Snap from Chalk Zone). Naw, I don't think that girl there is a reference to anything. And if it is, I messed it up first because I made the guy next to her and he definitely isn't referencing anything. Unless you think you're messing up HAL?
