I suppose a question to ask is "how best to get the attention of Andrew/his staff?" or is there some community project that could be drummed up here to show Andrew that the forums are worth saving? Operating under an understanding that nothing is currently being done (which very well might not be the case! they could be hard at work to fix things for all we know). Well, I tried tweeting to him a few days ago, but I got no response. In fairness, I didn't really expect a response, but still.

I've heard rumors the forums were hacked, and they had to shut them down to protect people's passwords or something like that.
I don't know how that stuff works, but maybe they have to move the forums to another server or adress or something like that in order to safely turn them on again.

What if... the real jack crap was the friends you made along the way, who are still here?
Wait. That reference doesn't quite work here.
Anyway I'd like to think they'll work on it after Homestuck ends. They're busy with coordinating the end, working on Hiveswap, and doing whatever their plans are with WLF right now.
OTOH it's possible the attackers deleted the database for whatever reason, and there were no backups. In that case there's not much they can do.

Aw that sucks. It's such a shame Hussie and co. are so reclusive nowadays, any one of him or his associates may be of assistance.

Sure, I know this as well, but it doesn't look like they want to bring them back either. I had a huge project there, and I can only recover half of it through an old back up that I was linked to. It turned out most of what I needed was in the missing pages. I don't think a little of clarification would be too much to ask...

AH and his team are just terrible at communicating with the fandom (as much popular as Homestuck is, it doesn't even have an official Facebook page, Twitter, Tumblr, or any social presence at all).
Sadly, that's something that never stopped being true.

Sadly, that's something that never stopped being true. Back in the early days I'm sure this wasn't the case. I mean there was Hussie's Formspring and he used to be active on the forums themselves.

According to this tweet the forums were hacked and it's all pretty much gone As I already said, one only discovers the value of backups upon losing data. It's sort of a natural law. (But seriously, what idiotic sysadmin doesn't even have a backup of THE PHP PAGES?!? Let's just hope no one ever hacks MSPA proper, because I don't really think its backups are any better ) Anyway, there already is a thread discussing this. Let's please keep this discussion in a single place.

I merged the two threads because like ConstantTroublemaker said, it's better to keep discussion in one place here. But yeah, this really isn't looking very good at all... I started this forum in the assumption it would only be needed temporarily for max. a week or so, but now it's looking like it might be needed for much longer than that.

The lack of communication is probably the most telling, yeah. Geez, back in the day, I think Andrew would have actually considered postponing the final updates until the forums came back on. Really shows how things have fallen... Can you imagine how many people not connected to the forums would blow a gasket if he actually did that? The fandom is not the same thing it was five years ago. And as for this communication business, it strikes me as something that was much more of a luxury than a necessity. I liked to hear what Andrew had to say as much as anyone else, and yes some openness about the behind-the-scenes would be nice, but I'm under no illusion that they are obliged to hand this information out to me or anyone else, just because we like a comic and bought some shirts. Their business is their business, end of story. AH and his team are just terrible at communicating with the fandom (as much popular as Homestuck is, it doesn't even have an official Facebook page, Twitter, Tumblr, or any social presence at all). Sadly, that's something that never stopped being true. In fairness, Hiveswap proved that they still wouldn't use any of those platforms if they have nothing to say. Okay I'll try to stop harping on this now. And even in the worst case scenario of "daoots", at least we've banded together as a nice lil fandom refugee camp of sorts. It's cozy, and feels a bit more personal. While it sucks that nothing from the forums can be accessed, maybe Blap could be convinced to start a forum adventure/RP subforum here ;P I've always kinda wanted to try doing a forum adventure... Exactly! This is a creative effort to keep things alive in the face of adversity. It always feels cool when the fandom does something like this. (But seriously, what idiotic sysadmin doesn't even have a backup of THE PHP PAGES?!? Let's just hope no one ever hacks MSPA proper, because I don't really think its backups are any better ) That's where you're wrong. readmspa (I forget the guy's forum name sorry) for sure has an offline archive of their own making that could be donated to WP should the need arise. Hey, don't sweat it. If you're up to the challenge, a little improvisation will ensure this place stands as long as it needs to.

The longer time passes, the more I think MSPAF isn't coming back. It's unfortunate but I'm also inclined to believe IPGD whether she's being serious or not. She's really in the know, I think?
It's really upsetting because my friends and I finally started a forum adventure there, after literally an entire year+ of planning, just for it to go down. :/ I'll be posting it here starting after I get back from work, but...
The silence is killing me. I get wanting to keep things hush hush, but there were a LOT of active users on those forums, including new ones (like me) still signing up and etc. This is completely unprofessional to not say a single word about it to anyone.

Yeah what the fuck, you can't just quietly release this as a rumor. Anyone know who it was that hosted the mcmittens mirror?

Maybe Andrew will get around to saying something about it in a newspost? If so, we might be without any direct info until the 13th.

I sort of went on a little bit of a rant about all this, because I do believe that the lack of transparency, disparaging comments from IPGD, and blatant lack of concern over their own fan community based on the MSPA Forums smacks of unprofessionalism. I'm pretty annoyed about it, to be honest.

According to this tweet the forums were hacked and it's all pretty much gone Well, damn. That was what I was afraid of. The way the forums went down was extremely weird. Day of, I saw that it went down by section. The main directory, then the sub directory pages with the thread links, and then the threads themselves. I thought it was weird, because why not take it all down all at once? If someone was deleting the PHP pages one by one... Damn. I'll revise my earlier guesses: Worst case, no MSPA forums return at all. Best case, we get a new forum with none of the old data. Damn, just... damn.

This isn't in any way a solution. While it might allow the recover of contents if the main site goes down, this by no means should be handled by some external volunteers manually saving the things YOU should take care of. As a professional sysadmin (yes, that's my JOB), I'm quite astounded at the level of unprofessionalism we are seeing here.

"Unprofessionalism" is definitely the keyword here.

I think to me, the more upsetting thing is the lack of communication. Like, even if they said, "We know there's a problem but we don't have the time/money to fix it." I wouldn't be as upset, because at the end of the day WP is a smaller business/ fledgling business at that. Even them saying "We fucked up" is better than nothing at all. I just want to know that I, as a consumer, am not being ignored. And not having a place to discuss the most important updates in all of Homestuck history is really the nail in the coffin.

Their business is their business, end of story. They are free to do whatever they want with their business, and we are free to boycott their business until they either go broke or do what we want them to do. Capitalism is a two-way street. We are the ones who decide whether WP gets to keep existing, not them. So they better make sure we are satisfied.
