Well, a bunch of howling does scare you. It scares you a lot, in fact. Hearing howling in a dark forest while you're all alone, you think you're justified to be a bit terrified.
Still, you've no reason not to do as the voice in your head says so...onward...deeper into the forest.
You don't like the feeling that thought gives you.
You walk, you keep walking through the forest with the torch illuminating your path.
And...well... You at least found the source of the howling.

This is not an ideal situation, not by a long shot. But at least your safer.

That was a really stupid idea.
But, you didn't really have any other option at the time. You needed your hands to climb the tree, and it's not like you can sprout a third arm to hold the torch. You certainly didn't exactly have the time to stop and think of how to carry the torch up the tree, Mr. Hungry Wolf Thing down there was hardly going to just wait patiently while you hashed out ideas.
But...hey... maybe nothing will come from it?

You can’t stay in that tree not when there’s a fire burning. You need to pull some Tarzan level of acrobatics and start running from branch to branch
