Ooh wow lots of options here, thanks for the suggestions! I'll be sure to check this all out. Feel free to ask if you need help learning some of the basics with Sai or Photoshop, happy to help. ITT: What's your favorite example of "It gets better" in a fan adventure? Ones that start off bad/mediocre but gets better and better as time goes on. This is a toughie because I doubt most people keep reading an adventure that they feel doesn't do it for them long enough for it to grow on them. I can think of maybe Cool and new webcomic or Item Unoriginal, but those were never actually that offputting to begin with. But I would definitely be interested in any if anyone's got any other answer.

I've been kinda out of the Homestuck fandom for a while now; what are the current cool popular adventures nowadays? I know Nightfall's still going, but what else? Is there anything new that's really good? Also, while Sandswept survived the MSPAF crash, Planetwarped very sadly did not... I have most of the images (except for the Anime Intermission), but the actual forum thread itself was part of the comic's narrative and without that, it just doesn't work out that well...

everything else is just starting out Or reconstructing. As far as popular adventures? I'd say Prequel and Paper Mario and the Everclear Night were always pretty damn popular. Prequel has it's own site so it's fine, but I'm not so sure about PMatEN.

I don't know how popular it was, but Loftlocked is back now which I'm pretty excited about because I definitely thought it had died. Probably one of my favorite "stuck style" adventures.

ARTSTUCK was okay when it started, suddenly got amazing when the black evil bunny showed up for some reason. And then the adventure that Jacquerel posted a while ago was just meh at the beginning, but then turned into something pretty cool. It could have been better if that fucking old goddess bitch was gutted and killed in a violent fashion but you can't win them all.

Myself included twice. only if i get to be the childhood friend who is the most obvious final choice for a waifu Well, I guess that makes me the trap, and since neptz has hamura as her icon, she can be the tsundere who gets way more plot significance then anyone else.

Sburbventures need to stop existing. Or at least following the same damn set up that's been done to death.
Where's the excitement in reading a story of the same group of children playing a game in which the audience already knows everything about? It's also not good when the writers are afraid to make deviations in terms of plot, and worldbuilding.
The trick is not to just attempt to recreate what made Homestuck good, but to take advantage of what it couldn't do. Learn from Hussie's mistakes. If you've ever noticed anything about Homestuck that you believe could have been done better, then why not do that instead?
Maybe even for example in around ACT 3 or so when John was starting to get pimped out with all those alchemizations and what not, you may have thought that they were getting too strong too fast, to where at one point the fights just start to lose tension since our main characters were already 2 OP for the enemies.
And just with that idea you can build your adventure around that. Why not make your characters vulnerable? Make the audience feel the danger. Find the right balance between 2 stronk there's no tension, and having the situation so bleak that (ta-da) there's no tension.
And that's just one example.

There is a problem with planning that stuff too late though, since unlike an original product, its hard to keep your audience interested while you get to twists and new interests. Considering this, it would be important to set it up so that these twists are noticeable immediately. Infact, considering how everyone's seen the opening part of these comics done again 5,000 times, it'd probably be worth it to have a cold opening somewhere around Act 4, where you can quickly introduce a character at the brink of being killed by an ogre or something, and then explain in frustration about how they are unable to combine objects in their game due to a glitch of something, so they can only use items they find in their world. Getting to the meat of the story is very important for something that's been done so many times.

Fuck yeah, usually when I get interested ina sburbventure it's already way late in it's story. The initial part has and will always be boring as fuck.

Bluh. I may start my other FA along side Trojansnared, as I won't feel like I'm living in the shadow of Hussie and sburb negativity. I'm still gonna do it along side as it's more for myself then anything at this point. I'm not sure what to make it about though. Which of these sound more interesting? - A robot gains intelligence, unfamiliar memories and a sense of humanity in a world where all life has been killed. - A cute world hides a sinister interior, with corruption and terror hide behind every playhouse door. - Maybe jump back to my old FA that got lost on the old forums. Minority: In a world where a dystopian overlord put all the gays on an island and such things. Problem is, you're in the closet. Start a revolution or run and hide from the oppression?

Personally, I understand this despite making YET ANOTHER sburbventure. However, I don't think they should stop existing, that's like saying fanfictions shouldn't exist because they just make the same mistakes as their show/book/whatever. If anything, they should exist, but they should serve as a purpose of how to improve our own. In most cases, Sburbventures are more fulfilling for the writer than the audience. While it's not always good to say, isn't that they key aspect of creating a FA, wasn't the FA section in the original forums created mainly for Sburb Sessions? Yes, they should exist but yes, they need massive improvement. Even (especially) mine. But even then, I don't think discouraging them will allow us to see any high quality ones. Rather, we could be supportive and offer useful criticism when the creators are willing to listen. Edit: However, I do feel that the begining could be much more interesting in most Sburbventures. The world before entering is always the same; just a regular old earth. I don't really like these versions, I plan to avoid it. A world that's broken before destruction makes the game seem like it gives hope, false hope is the most effective though.

I was exaggerating about that, but what I mean is imagine a pie you have the pie crust that's the homestuck foundation that's the foundation.the pie crust. but people forget to add the fruit or whatever you fill inside a pie called (okay i just googled it it's called pie filling) basically they need better fruit. it's either you change the pie crust or stop making pies. also on your previous post I LOVE the idea where you put all the gays in an island. not that i hate gays. just kidding i do, but more cause it's a unique idea and there's lots of interesting scenarios that can come out of it. however, i don't like the idea of "START REVOLUTION OR HIDE FROM OPRESSION" it's just CLICHE and is just uninteresting to me as an audience. all the other prompts are trash to me. i don't actually hate gays.

Sburbventures are not inherently bad, it's just that they are too derivative of Homestuck and don't put much of any twist on the formula. Fantroll sessions at least try to expand the world of Alternia, if often not successfully, but most other Sburbventures put too much faith in their ability to capture what made the first 4 Acts of Homestuck as fantastic as they were. Act 1 of Homestuck is still pretty great stuff, but it's not just because of the shenanigans. They went on for a long time, but they helped you understand John's character very well, introduced all the weird world/meta mechanics like sylladex, strife, {S} pages, and Sburb itself in a natural, exploration-friendly way.
Since probably 100% of all fan adventure readers have also read Homestuck, there's no reason to have to spend the 200 pages Homestuck spent on building up itself, because readers already know what they're getting themselves into. That's why Hivebent spent most of its intro showing off Alternia and how their session was different from Homestuck's. That's why Act 6-1 and 6-2 spent most of its time doing shenanigans that served mostly to show how different it was from Homestuck.
In my own Sburbventure, I think our first 60 pages were relatively lackluster because the pace wasn't quite fast enough, especially when it has to introduce 48 characters by the end. Hivebent's pace was TOO fast, but grabbing readers as early as possible is definitely something you gotta do, or else you'll lose them. The comic has to twist Homestuck SOMEHOW. A session with only two players? Only three players? The direct descendants of successful players doing their own session? A comic that starts mid-session and progresses nonchronologically in a mystery format? An Oldboy-style revenge plot mixed in with Sburb?
The characters also should be like, uh, good. Their interests should show off their character and personality. Not too strongly or it's obvious, but it should be like... the kind of stuff a real person would be interested in, though weirder. Most Sburbventures have their characters' interests either be too similar to Homestuck characters', or too similar to their own. Mostly the latter. Can't tell you the amount of times I've seen characters' rooms be plastered with Adventure Time and anime posters and cosplay material. John's interests include bad movies, pranks, and programming badly. Rose's interests include knitting, writing, and eldritch abominations. Dave's include photography, music, and ironic webcomics. (Jade's schtick is that she is interested at everything so she is an outlier) It's all really normal interests that tell us about them... plus really weird interests that make them notable. The least memorable troll (Feferi) also has the least memorable interests (having pets), which is no coincidence.
Like Nero said, early Homestuck did have a lot of things it didn't take advantage of. The aclhemization basically faded away by mid-Act 3, and because the session went off-rails due to Jack Noir, we didn't get to see a lot of parts of the session. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but there are definitely ways to set the comic apart from its source material. You don't HAVE to have exiles. You probably should NOT have trolls or any other extra-incipispherical communication.
Take ahold of something that will make your adventure unique. Even if people don't remember its title, they'll still go, "Oh yeah, I remember some Sburbventure. It was the one with _______." Fill in the blank and, uh, yeah. I'm bad at finishing posts like these.

I like to see Stuckventures as a starting-block. The Sburb plotline can be some kind of base for a completely original adventure, to give an initial situation and then follow with the good stuff. Many Mspfa beginners may not realise that there actually can be other Fanventure formats than "OCs play Sburb". Mspfanventures.com is a Homestuck-themed site before a webcomic hosting site: that's a common thought. Based on personal experiences, I can agree with the "it gets better" mindset, given there's an initial effort of originality. Sometimes all a story needs to get good is some encouragement.
