Let's talk webcomics, since I know most Homestuck fans aren't JUST into Homestuck! It's a medium I've always been super into growing up, and lord knows there are a lot of them out there... good, bad, and everywhere in-between. I think it's cool that we live in an age where literally anyone can create and post comics online as long as you have the basic tools to. Webcomics also have some interesting differences when compared to print comics... being able to see an artist's progression over time, a low barrier for entry, (often) accessible creators, and the possibility for things like animation or interactivity or whatever. Shameless plug: I actually have a webcomic myself called True Colors! It's about some friends' first day at college and the challenges they face while getting their bearings, making new friends, and figuring out who they want to be in the next chapter of their lives. You should check it out (and let me know what you think). Other comics that I'm super into that you might like too: ParanaturalGunnerkrigg Court The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal (NSFW at times) Cucumber Quest xkcdSaturday Morning Breakfast Cereal...And lots of others! What about you guys?

Seconding xkcd, of course.
I must add The Order Of The Stick, probably the best D&D-based webcomic out there (and a great story on its own, with lots of plot points which get actually resolved, albeit possibly after a very long time). Also Erfworld, which began as a guest comic in the same site as OOTS and then took on a life of its own.

seconding gunnerkrig court and xkcd i barely read webcomics because most of them are just slapstick humor all day every day (with the exception of xkcd, which i'm interested in because of the artstyle) most of them also have a western artstyle i'm really just not into

Fourthing Xkcd! It's just the right amount of both thought-provokation and humor for me.

I think it's been discontinued, sadly, but I used to love Olympus Overdrive. Shame it couldn't keep going, but definitely still worth checking out! I also read Ava's Demon, although it's been a while since I've checked on that. I usually like to check it every couple months so I can read larger chunks of the story, lol.

Fifthing xkcd, it's so brilliantly clever. And I really like Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal. As for MSPA-inspired comics, NEO-KOSMOS is pretty good. And who here has heard of Prequel? It started out as a fanventure back on the mspa forums before getting its own site. It's set in the Elder Scrolls universe, but you don't need to have played those games to understand it.

Oh just remembered another new one I discovered recently, Dear Children. It actually started as a Homestuck adventure before it was revamped into what it is now! Worth checking out as well.

Seconding Ava's Demon. Michelle has finally started to update a bit more frequently now, so that's hopeful. Gunnerkrigg and Paranatural are also both good too. Some other ones: Monsterkind is a good, talking a lot about racism but also having an underlying conspiracy going on. It's looking to be very interesting. Namesake is good for those of us who love old fairy tales. It's also one of the best examples of a diverse cast that's out there in webcomics. Helvetica is hilarious. If only it didn't have such a sporadic update schedule, but I know that webcomic-ing is hard, so I don't blame him. While it doesn't have a coherent plot, Awkward Zombie is a great comic if you are into video games. I haven't read it in a while, but ColorQuest is shaping up for interesting things. The site is down right now, unfortunately, but here's a link to the tumblr page in case you wanna get some of the more recent updates.

I read literally hundreds of webcomics, so I'm obviously not going to list all of them, but one of my favorites that I feel you all will like too and hasn't been mentioned is Girl Genius, a mad science based action adventure story that has even won several awards.

Seconding SMBC, xkcd, Monsterkind, OoTS, and also Prequel and Ava's Demon providing either of them ever feels like updating again ever. :V Adding Monster Pulse (What happens when you take 'kids with fighting monsters' stuff like Pokemon or Digimon and make it their now-missing bodyparts instead. Looking For Group is a fantasy webcomic that was definitely never a World of Warcraft parody, absolutely nope. Has kind of sprawled out into a gelatinous ooze of a plot that doesn't seem to really go anywhere. Dr McNinja. Borderline-absurdist action fantasy story set in a world like ours, but with some crazy shit like children turning into giant paul bunions due to a facial hair disease and whatnot. Is coming to an end sometime fairly soon, apparently. Awkward Zombie is a hilarious gag-a-day videogame strip. Manly Guys Doing Manly Things is also gag-a-day, mostly video games but involves movies, TV shows, and anything else with macho dudes (Subverting stereotypes about them to comedic effect)

Neo-kosmos is alright if you like steven universe, I suppose. It's promising, but has just barely started so I can't say anything. I used to regularly read prequel, but then I lost my place in the story and then it began to update and now I have no idea.

If you mean Growing Up in the sense that Homestuck is about that, it's not much like that. There's really nothing like the troll or alpha kid "teen drama" that people seem to dislike.

I'm going to express some descenting opinions here:
I never understood why so many people love Gunnerkrigg Court. I mean, don't get me wrong it's a good comic; it's got an entertaining story of consistent quality, and for a webcomic that's great! But I'd never put it among my favorites because it never pulled my into the story or inspired any emotional connection
Also, I'm not that big a fan of Dumbing of Age. I still follow it, but that's because I was more a fan of his earlier, wacky humor based comics. Dumbing of Age, with its attempts at more serious stuff and its seemingly anvilicious attitude, is honestly failing to keep my interest.

I'm just a huge fan of the world of Gunnerkrigg Court. It's built as a mystery, with the central character(s) knowing nothing about it, but as the story progresses, we (and they) get more and more glimpses into how this world works, and start getting more active. It starts off fairly unremarkable, as a story-of-the-week in a Harry Potter style universe with plain characters, but gradually deepens until the plot unfolds, revealing even more questions and unique characters. Not really sure when it happened, but I fell in love with the characters and their interactions.

TBH I think that DoA is actually not very preachy at all, and the problem is just that people will call anything "heavy-handed" if it even acknowledges certain social issues at all. I kind of agree with you about Gunnerkrigg Court tho.

Because nobody mentioned it yet - Kill Six Billion Demons. Formerly a fanventure at MSPAF, it has some really really fantastic worldbuilding influenced by Hinduism and Gnosticism, and some fun characters as well.

Order of the Stick, Dr. McNinja, Ava's Demon; all of those have been mentioned.
One I haven't seen yet is Cucumber Quest! I love that comic. I'm still upset that I don't really have any available way of getting book 3; I have books 1 and 2.
Whomp can be fun. I tend to stick to the story adventures over joke-a-day ones. Geez, I used to keep up with 30 or so comics and it's whittled down to like, 5.
Edit: How about great comics that stopped without a proper end? Daisy Owl was a good read but it just sort of abruptly ended.
Or how about Minus, Great, etc... Geez, I can't even remember the name of the one comic that was still being updated before the entire site went down. Snake Heads something or other; I enjoyed it still.
Used to pay attention to the Snafu-comics collective. Used to read XKCD but stopped, not sure why. Similar with Dinosaur Comics. Good comic, just got tired of it.
VGCats, Nuklear Power, oh...
Fanboys always felt like a comic that should have taken off but couldn't quite get over the hump.
I remember briefly reading this comic where the main plotlne seemed to be the girl waking up with a unicorn tattoo on her ass and that this was very much a big deal. Paranormal something for the name.
Never really liked Ctrl Alt Del or Penny Arcade. Geez, I remember back when a lot of people would recommend Ctrl Alt Del. I never got it; looked stupid to me.
I don't read Questionable Content but it seems like something that comes up in conversation a lot so I feel like I know the basic plot points.
Oh, and that one smash brothers focused comic, oh, what was it. It was one I marathoned, not one I kept up with day-to-day.
Brawl in the family, that's right. Good jokes throughout.
There's Romantically Apocalyptic. It's a bit too confusing I think.
Erfworld I got fed up with because of the art changes and the constant text-based updates. I just lost my patience with it. It was good for what part of it I read.
Otaku Dad I suppose counts.
Wanted to get into Girl Genius but never could seem to get into it. Heard good things about Rice Boy and Gunkering (spelling) Court too.
Ah! Now I'm starting to think of ones I haven't touched in a long while.
The Meek. Seemed to have potential but died out really. Ava's Demon reminds me of it a bit, actually.
Nedroid I still have bookmarked though it never updates. He does the inking for Dr. Mcninja, doesn't he? Or the coloring. Maybe both.
Lackadaisy Cats, of course.
Johnny Wander. I preferred when they did slice-of-life strips. Lucky Penny was pretty good though.
Ah man. Three Panel Soul. And Ah, shit... what was it called. Their first comic. Oh.... phooey. Mac hall? One of my favorites for that was the nuklearator comic for whatever reason. It stands out, at least.
Let's stop the edit here for now. There's ton more I used to read.

Oh man. Remember White Ninja? Does anyone? That used to be one of my favorites. SMBC of course.
Perry Bible Fellowship. That actually still updates sometimes. The one with the Poseidon the Pedophilia was my favorite.
Edit: Oh yeah, and Jack. Or something like that. 18+ adult killer bunny sin thing. I lost interest somewhere along the way. It had its moments.

If we're broadening it to comics we have/still read despite not actually recommending them, Sinfest (Has been mostly consumed by angry feminist rantings) Dominic Deegan (I can't believe I stuck through all that shit) and +1 to Penny Arcade (Eh, its okay in a mediocre way I guess?) And one that I am ashamed of myself for forgetting to mention, Goblins! Set in a D&D world, the basic premise is humanizing the nameless mook NPCs, focusing on a party of Goblins whose village gets razed by some low-level adventurers. It's been running for a long time and as you can see by the starting page pointing it out, the art has evolved *DRAMATICALLY* from when it started.

And yeah, the one site did go down. It is a shame. Minus was such a gem. Speaking of sites that went down. Sad Pictures for Children. Or something close to that. Talk about a meltdown. Used to love it though. I wish I had saved some of the stuff from "Brian and Sora's adventures" or something like that. Brian Clevinger's friend made 10 or so awful comics. But they were still fun. Can't find a damn thing on the internet about his Fonzeroth joke.
