I think, if we wanted to restructure it, maybe it could remade so that the Beta session and Alpha session happen concurrently? Like instead of the Alpha kids being introduced after Cascade, they are introduced earlier on. This would allow for more character development as well. Then you make some insane twists happen. Like, maybe frame the two session has happening concurrently to one another in such a way that it is revealed that the Beta kids and the Alpha kids are related, or something along those line. Then, the two sessions meeting and gathering to take down the final boss can be part of the true final act. I t would have to be cleaner than that, onviously, but I think that would help redistribute the lenght of the act a bit more evenly. I am continuously advocating for this, and will do so until someone stops me.

Personally, I think in an adaptation/reboot, the characters should all stay. They can't. Except if you're looking for a book series. Homestuck has too many characters by any standards. In the protagonists/allies category only, there are 71. A TV show could absolutely manage that many characters. Also, put me down on the side of not changing the plot or order of the story in any significant way. It can be adapted fine as is.

Honestly, I don't understand the POV of people who want less trolls. (Unless they mean alpha trolls, in which case yes, because the alpha trolls can suck it.) If there ever was an adaptation/reboot/rewrite of Homestuck, it'd pretty much be criminal to leave them out. Troll romance and society are awesome, and a Homestuck without Kanaya, Karkat or Terezi is a Homestuck I don't want anything to do with. I like Caliborn and Calliope a lot, but I can at least understand why an adaptation would be better off for getting rid of cherubs as a species, and even kind of agree. They don't really add any cool sci-fi alien concepts that the trolls don't already bring to the table, aside from some frankly pretty weaksauce pseudo-yin-yang cosmogony. (Good word usage from cauchemar!) It's more that I associated the trolls with a massive slowdown and wrench tossed into how the comic was going, they were fun characters and I enjoy them but dear lord I always felt like things hit a brick wall in terms of developing the plot because we were essentially being introduced to the aftermath of ANOTHER adventure and being caught up on the shit that was happening. They were neat but I still associate them with a lot of stuff that acted more like an interesting diversion than anything else. Once they started interacting with the beta kids more directly I was able to swallow it easier. Again, I'm biased, I never really found any of the troll characters that interesting, it seemed more like they were a number of plot devices with a nice zodiac theme and some quirks.

Yeah, shows like LOST, Steven Universe, and Avatar the Last Airbender had fairly large casts if you're just counting all protags/allies. Of course HS really only fcoused on 13-16 "major" character, with the rest in the "minor" category camp. Viewing it like that makes it more managable.

I'm pretty sure Homestuck is just plain impossible to replicate in a movie/show formula. Here are some reasons why:
1. Homestuck is super complicated and dialogue-heavy. If a studio wanted to make Homestuck a movie, they'd have to cut out most of the dialogue and tons of shenanigans, basically oversimplify the whole plot to the point it wouldn't be Homestuck anymore, since if they didn't, we would have a movie where 80% of the whole thing is dialogue. Thrilling, ain't it?
2. Way too many things are happening at the same time. Unless you wanna cut your movie to pieces, you won't be able to keep track of ALL THE THINGS HAPPENING WITHIN 4 UNIVERSES AT ONCE. It worked in a comic formula, where one event is one page, but in a moving film? Eh, don't count on it.
3. Way too large cast. Pretty sure it was explained in this thread already, so I'm not going deep into it.
4. Some jokes and other stuff that worked perfectly in a comic just plain wouldn't work in a movie. The biggest example is character introduction. Unless you're a genius, you won't be able to explain a character in a Homestuck film as good as it was in the original thing. Remember, in a film, you can't just slap text to a scene and call it a day.
5. who the f*ck was the person who thought it was a good idea to give Homestuck to Hollywood's greedy, ignorant hands. just no man. no.
I really hope "Homestuck: The Movie" will not ever become a thing.

See that's why I think Homestuck 2.0 will be more like a sequel than an adaptation.

I dunno if it's a thing but it'd be interesting if Homestuck did become a TV series, since there could be stuff like after-episode exposition and side-stories (ala Steven Universe shorts). Like early on, it could have stuff like Rose discussing SBURB's early game as she writes her walkthrough with John helping out on punch code alchemy, Dave doing rap or talking about how sylladices work or SBAHJ, or Jade's shenanigans around Prospit. Later on, it could work as mini-episodes about the Exiles, the Midnight Crew, or the Alternian Ancestors and the Beforan crew. It would have a similar effect to how the banner during Doc Scratch's portion served to tell two stories at the same time while freeing up a ton more space for focusing on the stories of the Kids and the Alternian crew. It might even serve to clear up a ton of stuff about classpects, denizens, and all sorts of info concerning SBURB. (which... might be my main concern about all this)
Other possible things that could happen might be the character Hussie randomly showing up and doing a lot of funny stuff, or something like Calliope/Aranea's exposition corner.
Anyway, heck it might even work in reverse with Caliborn's homosuck either condensed into a single episode or is the shorter "main-episode" with the "intermissions" being longer after-episode stories.
I'd agree though that Homestuck definitely won't work as a movie on its own, but as a show, it's got promise. It can still have its flexibility in the small screen as the webcomic has on the internet.

Which is why tv would be better. It's become part of the experience of watching a show to finish an episode and then find yourself a message board on which to theorize and argue with other fans about what's going to happen and what different things mean. I think the problem is that because movies are so expensive, there's no way we'd get everything in there with the time afforded. 3. Way too large cast. Pretty sure it was explained in this thread already, so I'm going deep into it. It is a big cast, but some characters get way more to do than others, and if it's animated it's just voice work that's needed. Hell, arguably some characters don't even talk, like the carapacians. To be fair, those introduction jokes, while still funny, are pretty dead after how long it's been since Hussie stopped taking suggestions and Homestuck become more of its own story. 5. who the f*ck was the person who thought it was a good idea to give Homestuck to Hollywood's greedy, ignorant hands. just no man. no. I really hope "Homestuck: The Movie" will not ever become a thing. I'll remain cautiously optimistic about this. I think whatever this is, as long as Hussie's heavily involved, it has a chance to be good. See that's why I think Homestuck 2.0 will be more like a sequel than an adaptation. I still say a sequel would have all the problems of an adaptation, plus more. And honestly I think wanting a sequel to Homestuck before we see what's in that epilogue is a little premature.

I'd rather not have a sequel to homestuck. The comic lasting for 7 years is already enough. And Hiveswap is the 'thing that's related to Homestuck but isn't a sequel', so 2.0 shouldn't be that. I think an adaption that's more available to the public would be the best. Because honestly, the comic did become very popular, but it was more of an internet phenomenon. Undertale became more popular than Homestuck ever did because I can say to a lot of people in real life 'do you know Undertale?' and they would know what it is, while the same is not true for Homestuck. I can only find Homestuck fans at conventions. I think the public deserves to know the beauty that is of Acts 1-5. Act 6, not so much.

Surprised this hasn't been posted here yet, but there was a new article posted, with Dante Basco giving more information about the project. And it sounds like an effort to bring Homestuck to Hollywood. Somehow.

This is the third hint that Homestuck 2.0 IS GOING TO BE SOMETHING BIG (Fourth, if you include the whole Rapture dealie). My money's on a TV show (except not literally because I won't throw money at my TV).

I really hope it's not actually a Hollywood movie like people keep speculating. I'm already wary enough hearing "Homestuck" and "Hollywood" in the same sentence.

I find it really fascinating how different people latch onto certain characters or parts of the story (or detest them) for so many different reasons. The characters or parts of it that make it for one person seem to ruin it for another in a special sort of way that most other stories just don't seem to be capable of.
But yeah, while I think Homestuck could do alright as a TV show or web series, a movie or movie series is hard to imagine going well.

First, assuming that HS 2.0 is a reboot/reimagining of HS rather than something more tangential, I think we just would really need to just tighten things and do some reorganization, rather than cutting/removing things. I think that while the Beforus trolls are interesting, if we need to remove things, they could probably go althogether. At lot of the things that they do could just be replaced by some of the already introduced trolls. Granted, most of the trolls were meant to be just side characters rather than important centerpieces, to be fair. Lord English and the cherubs really shouldn't be removed because Lord English was always set up from early on as the final boss. I think, if we wanted to restructure it, maybe it could remade so that the Beta session and Alpha session happen concurrently? Like instead of the Alpha kids being introduced after Cascade, they are introduced earlier on. This would allow for more character development as well. Then you make some insane twists happen. I t would have to be cleaner than that, onviously, but I think that would help redistribute the lenght of the act a bit more evenly. Maybe they could introduce the Trolls sooner, then show the Betas and Trolls concurrently, then introduce the Alphas as soon as the Scratch is explained, and show the Alphas, Betas, and Trolls concurrently, then maybe introduce the Alpha Trolls sooner and show their adventures, give them some more focus than they got in the comic, and introduce the Cherubs a little sooner, then show everyone's shenanigans concurrently? That way we could avoid jumping around between Acts, Intermissions, Act-Acts, Act-Intermissions, Act-Act-Acts, and Act-Act-Intermissions, Act-Intermission-Intermissions, Act-Intermission-Interfishins, Act-Act-Act X2 Combos, Parts, Disks, Expansion Cartridges, End of Acts, and other such sub-divisions.

I assume Act 7 and the Epilogue would be The Movie? Also, got any ideas for season names? Unless the epilogue is as long as an Act or two, I don't think there'd be enough material there for a movie. Also, seasons generally don't have names. There just....season 1, season 2, etc. Unless you live in the UK, where they're series 1 and series 2.

So, maybe Homestuck 2.0 will be something like what the FNAF movie is supposed to be, a story that takes place in the same universe as Homestuck, and maybe has some direct connections, but is its own story? Or maybe it will be about the Alpha Trolls?

You have never seen a show with named seasons? I admit it is not super common, but it does happen often enough. Examples: The Pokemon Anime, Power Rangers, some of Red vs. Blue, the "Total Drama" series

I find it really fascinating how different people latch onto certain characters or parts of the story (or detest them) for so many different reasons. The characters or parts of it that make it for one person seem to ruin it for another in a special sort of way that most other stories just don't seem to be capable of. This is exactly why I think cutting any characters, parts, plot points, or plot lines would be a bad idea.

There just....season 1, season 2, etc. Unless you live in the UK, where they're series 1 and series 2. Seriously? You have never seen a show with named seasons? I admit it is not super common, but it does happen often enough. Examples: The Pokemon Anime, Power Rangers, some of Red vs. Blue, the "Total Drama" series That's because things changed drastically between seasons. Power Rangers would get new bad guys, Total Drama would move to a new location or start over with all the characters that got kicked off early, and Red vs. Blue had all that 'project freelancer' stuff, so they kind of had to rename the seasons so people would know they hadn't given up on the old plot lines and weren't starting over with a new series altogether. I think we should keep the jumping around, just add more things to jump around to. Moving from one character to another was a great (and annoying) way to add suspense which made the payoffs that much greater. I still like the idea of cutting to moments in the Alpha session between moments where the Betas are trying to get in the game. Probably a couple of Acts in, after we've gotten to know the Guardians a little bit. Play off the theory a lot of people have that the Guardians had their own session when they were young. This will help us develop the Alpha kids and make it less painful when we switch to their entry, because by that time the audience knows who they really are and are curious how they got into their game. I would also like to do this with the trolls, but have it be very carefully edited so that newcomers are lead to think they're just another group of players from earth. At least until the trolls' troubling, unchildlike behavior becomes more and more prominent and the time comes where it has to be revealed that they aren't what they seemed to be. This could help the episode(s) devoted to Alternia and its session's exposition be a little less rushed. Also, does anybody else feel like the journey to the session being 3 years long was a mistake? It feels like too much, and like it was just used to age up our kids because the Alphas were going to be older than them. I kind of can't picture that the kids wouldn't have gone crazy after three years, or at the very least stopped giving a shit about the game at all, and it's strongly at odds with the faster pace and urgency of the first five acts. I think I'd rather the journey were significantly shorter and the kids were all the same age from the start, or at least closer in age, anyway.

Actually, it turns out that season titles are mostly an anime thing. Then again, Homestuck did finally evolve into the anime it was always meant to be, so I still think they would fit. I think I'd rather the journey were significantly shorter and the kids were all the same age from the start, or at least closer in age, anyway. Wow! That could actually work really well. As long as they were careful with the Alpha Kids, and made sure not to show too much of the messed up things in their Session, it would not spoil too much. It could even imply that the whole thing where the Alphas have to wait for the Betas was about waiting for the kids to be born/land in meteors, instead of waiting for them to arrive in the Session from their own. I think the journey should probably stay three years long, and instead it should be made more explicit that the kids are training over those three years. Otherwise, arc numbers would be off.

I'm very happy about this but only if done right...creating a homestuck movie or show will be very difficult for a multitude of reasons. And it might not be received well by some fans if it doesn't agree with their headcanons. I'm hoping that instead it takes place in homestuck's universe instead of being an adaptation or sequel. There's barely any info out there...although bless dante because he's just great. (I'm really glad he liked homestuck ahah)

I honestly haven't seen that much at all, but I think when it does happen it's usually because the anime was based on a manga, and manga chapters and/or volumes more commonly have names. I think the journey should probably stay three years long, and instead it should be made more explicit that the kids are training over those three years. Otherwise, arc numbers would be off. If you mean the Beta kids' beta being released on 4/13/09 and the Alpha kids' alpha being released on 11/11/11, that doesn't happen because the kids travel the Furthest Ring for three years. One doesn't have anything to do with the other. It wouldn't affect the arc numbers at all.
