Feels like it's trying to appeal to people who play Hiveswap but haven't checked out Homestuck yet. It shows the characters but gives nothing else away about the drama and crazy that comes later on, while the art for the earlier books seems to be saying to those looking at it: "Yeah, you know what's coming."

It shows the characters but gives nothing else away about the drama and crazy that comes later on, while the art for the earlier books seems to be saying to those looking at it: "Yeah, you know what's coming." That's a good point, but I don't feel the scenes shown on the old covers were particularly spoilery; someone who doesn't know the story will not know the context of the covers, but they will still be eye-catching. As I said, they may have been made for people who already read the comic, but they still work for those who haven't. I guess my overall point, though, is not to praise the original covers, but to remark on just how boring the new cover looks in comparison.

So I took a look at your post and decided to compare covers for myself For reference, here's the old cover: And here's the new one: To be honest, I like the old one better. While the new one certainly has a cleaner, better quality image and appeals to the aesthetics of Hiveswap, I feel the old one is more eye-catching. While the new one does better at making it look 3D, it still come off as more flat, just 3 kids walking in a line. And I didn't show them, but I feel the same holds true for the old books 2 and 3; the new one just looks boring in comparison. Admittedly I was being a little overly defensive for the new version, but the more I look at it the more I really do like it. The old version certainly is eye catching, but there's a certain charm to the simple composition of the new one. A pattern I think is unlikely to be repeated in future books. I mean it's not like it's a really glaring thing, just sort of some differences in the approach of either. When I look at the old covers, I see scenes from pivotal moments of the acts, redrawn by Andrew in his Good style. Book 1 in particular is very Hero Mode, though the next two tone that down somewhat. I'd disagree with your last point there. Like I said, the relatively mundane new cover I think better portrays the majority of the book's contents, which is kids standing around in rooms for most panels. Especially for those who have heard some of the hype of Homestuck, or those coming from Hiveswap with its lush, detailed backgrounds, it can be some pretty dry stuff to get into for the unprepared. Man, I sound like I'm shooting Homestuck in the leg here. I just mean the relaxed, basic nature of the cover better sets the stage for a book that, compared to the rest of the story, is a lot of gradual upward movement and laying of groundwork before the more sweeping excitement takes hold. It's a good "first in a series" kind of cover, is all I'm trying to say. And what I find exciting about it is that there's a chance the next book covers could look like anything, and might not necessarily be what amount to panel redraws. Which are cool, but become kind of predictable over time. Who can predict what Homestuck Book 2: Act 3 & Intermission will look like? Considering the precedent, there are a number of possibilities. But like I said, it's not like this is REALLY MAJOR STUFF THAT DRIVES AN ENORMOUS WEDGE BETWEEN THE TWO APPROACHES TO HOMESTUCK BOOK COVERS. I like them both a lot, and don't really have regrets owning either one, other than the obvious one that now one series will never be finished. Actually, the irony of that just hit me. Once again it seems Homestuck has concluded its beta run and is now ready for the FULL release, now in book form. Yeeaaaaahh, that does sort of bug me. Then again, I can be such a tightass about spoilers my version of the cover would likely be virtually blank but for the title "HOMESTUCK." It at least serves the function of showing us the main characters of this book, with some relevant artifact in their arms (weaponry and communication devices), with John in the lead highlighting him as the primary protagonist. It does botch some of the 'mystery' to them, short of revealing their names early (unless you read the Author comments... oops.), but it does also make them better feel like John's close friends, giving them a sense of familiarity, which isn't really a bad thing. And it in turn highlights how mysterious JADE is, her being the only friend missing from the lineup, and barely appearing throughout the book.

Hmm since I was talking about the books in here last time might as well keep it here. Minor update! The Amazon pages for Book 1 and Book 2 (did I ever bring that up here? Well, it's been up for a while) have been updated with pictures of the front and back covers for both, as well as several pages inside. Additionally, I hear that the Barnes & Noble website has pages up for them, though not yet with images. The release dates remain the same either way. April 13 next year for Book 1, and a couple months later, July for Book 2. As we can see it looks like most of the content and formatting will be recycled from the existing Homestuck books, including the author commentary. But that's fine, because it's barely going to take any time to get caught up to the new content anyway (which you can get a preview of, looks pretty juicy so far). I guess this relegates the old books to something of a historical relic, outdated and obsolete. Maybe something for collectors to hoard. Sort of like a physical version of, say, a Homestuck beta release.

I have to say, I like the Book 2 cover a lot better than the Book 1 cover I complained about.

If I'm remembering what your comments were previously, do you think the context of the second cover improves the first in retrospect? Or do you just think the second is plain more interesting and the first still falls flat for you?

Or do you just think the second is plain more interesting and the first still falls flat for you? The first does fit in with the second, and is somewhat more understandable, but that doesn't stop it from falling flat for me. I guess a good way to put it is that it works when displayed next to book 2, but not on its own.

That makes sense. To me I still like the first one because it makes sense to look that way as the jumping off point for X number of books in this series, even before we knew what the next was going to look like, but I see your point too.

I wonder if SBAHJ: The Moibie will ever come out. That would be the greatest masterpiece of our era. Most likely, SBAHJ would be a spinoff of Homestuck 2.0, a quick humorous jaunt after a heavy-handed Hobbit-style trilogy.

Uhhhhhhhh....... So this felt like I guess the best place to put this. Looks like What Pumpkin pretty much doesn't exist anymore. The website www.whatpumpkin.com now redirects to something else. It sounds like there was some hidden stuff on this new website earlier that you could access. But it's all been taken down, so for now, what you see is what you get. There was a lengthy bit of text that got removed, which has become incredibly controversial from what I've been seeing. If you do some looking, you'll probably know what I mean. It's been a day. I'm very tired. I need some rest. It's getting pretty hard to be a Homestuck fan these days.

PSA: WP deleted their Tumblr and the domain got immediately scooped by a virus dealing spambot. Disregard that site entirely.
As for this """ARG""" (Condescendingly air-quoted because I'm not convinced that there is any 'G' in this 'ARG') It's just a mysterious set of latitude-longitude co-ordinates and a bunch of completely unrelated stuff that they threw in as 'secret' bonuses. One of the coordinates is near LA and, as of writing this post, some people are going to hike out there tomorrow to see if anything is there, but personally, I highly doubt it.

I do think maybe some people jumped the gun on calling it an "ARG" (non-condescendingly quoted) just because the site I guess pretends to be in Homestuck's universe? I do think it's highly, incredibly unlikely the What Pumpkin team (not sure if I can even call them that anymore...?) managed to hide much of anything, anywhere, let alone on spots all over the world, if my brief skimming of the GPS coordinates is anything to go by. Or the map, for that matter.
Hmmm. Well I just checked if the new Skaianet had a tumblr, but it looks like that domain was snatched up by a fan also looking into the possible ARG element of it. The What Pumpkin twitter was changed to Skaianet Systems and all previous tweets have been deleted, leaving it empty for now.
